Charley Walters: USC leading in race to sign Seantrel Henderson

Updated: 02/02/2010
It appears Southern California has become the front-runner to be Seantrel Henderson's college choice when it's announced this afternoon.
And Miami, which the highly recruited Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman visited last weekend, apparently has moved into a dark-horse position.
The 6-foot-8, 335-pound offensive lineman is in New York, where he'll announce his decision on the CBS College Sports TV network.
Ohio State, thought to be among top considerations the past few months, now seems to be in third place, followed by Minnesota. It would be a major surprise if Henderson chooses the Gophers.
USC was considered the clear favorite for Henderson until coach Pete Carroll recently left for the Seattle Seahawks.
There is an NCAA infractions committee hearing on USC basketball and football scheduled for Feb. 21, and even if Henderson were to announce that the Trojans are his choice, it wouldn't be surprising if he delayed signing a national tender until after potential findings of an investigation into the football program.
Word is that USC football could receive minor penalties, with basketball getting hit hardest. A worst-case scenario for football could include banning of games on national TV. It's unclear how that might affect Henderson's decision.
Even if Henderson announced for USC, he wouldn't have to sign a tender until April 1.
The person who had as much impact as anyone on Henderson and his family during a USC staff visit in Minneapolis last week was Monte Kiffin, father of USC coach Lane Kiffin. Trojans recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron also was among the visiting party to Henderson's home and school, as well as offensive line coach Jim Cregg.
Kiffin was a defensive coordinator for the Vikings as well as defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2002 Super Bowl champions. He is associate head coach at USC.
Upon Carroll's departure, USC lost two five-star recruiting commitments.
Henderson and his family were unexpectedly impressed with Miami last weekend, when Seantrel got to see up close Hurricanes alumni who had gone on to stardom in the NFL.

- Henderson is gonna be a Buckeye.
- Brian Kelly is confident that Henderson's going to be a Domer.
- Henderson's gonna sign with USC.
- Miami has vaulted itself into a dark horse position with Ohio State and Notre Dame in 3rd and 4th place.
What does this tell you? In this situation, if you aren't a close blood relative of Seantrel Henderson you likely have no clue what's going on.

Well played, sir.
