Seahawks (ex-USC) Coach Pete Carroll (official thread)

Joe Schad is reporting that Oregon State coach Mike Riley would be the clear leader to replace Carroll.

I doubt that would happen.

Riley was the OC for John Robinson in the 90s at USC, so there's a connection there. You also have to think that Riley knows that he's taken Oregon State about as far as they can go.

He's also been to Corvalis twice. I don't see him leaving the place he grew up.

Re: Meanwhile, Carroll's potentially monstrous upcoming class would be caught in upheaval. Next weekend, USC is scheduled to host official visits from 10 elite prospects, including three players -- receiver Robert Woods (a USC commit), running back Lache Seastrunk and defensive end Ronald Powell -- ranked among Rivals.com's top five players in the country. Rivals' No. 2 player, receiver Kyle Prater, is an Illinois native committed to USC who would undoubtedly think twice about heading west if Carroll is out of the picture.
"If Carroll goes, it will put USC into an insane [recruiting] spot," said SuperPrep's Allen Wallace. "They'll have to bring someone in real quick to hold that conglomeration of talent together."

And wouldn't that be a dirty shame.

Even then I will be waiting to make sure he doesn't pull a Billy Donovan and back out at the last minute. He wasn't successful at the NFL level prior, also, how much of a pay increase will he get? Is it going to be worth it? You stay at SC, you're going to get winning recruits, you're a god in LA, go to Seattle and you need to build a team and be successful, and the NFL isn't really patient when it comes to doing it.

Agreed. The only thing Seattle has going for it is that it's a pro gig. He's a king in college football, and southern California.

Maybe this is smoke about NCAA punishment. We'll see.

I heard the hype about him potentially leaving when SD fired Marty, so we'll see. Seems his name is always up when people are talking about a pro gig like Stoops names comes up whenever a college gig comes up.

Re: But then came the Joe McKnight incident.
For the first time in recent memory, Carroll, the consummate man in charge, seemed truly blindsided by USC's investigation into the running back's use of an SUV allegedly purchased for his girlfriend by a Santa Monica entrepreneur. Carroll spent the week of the bowl game fielding McKnight-related questions for which he literally didn't have an answer.
L.A. Times columnist T.J. Simers penned this Dec. 23 column about the incident, saying Carroll had been "hung out to dry" by bumbling USC AD Mike Garrett and chronicling the coach's rough 2009. Based on some of Carroll's comments in the article, he didn't seem to disagree.
"You're right," Carroll said of his program's recent p.r. hits. "And it hits you right in the gut."

Maybe he wants out of USC because he's still [censored]ed off at Garrett and believes that, if NCAA sanctions come down, Garrett will make him the "fall guy".

It sounds like a culmination of the A.D. and the McKnight situation...seems like he wants to get out Calipari style. Boy would this bode well for us with Henderson. If this happens, consider the proportions...Petey leaves, Bowden is forced into retirement, and Meyer quits/takes leave of absence. Beyond that to a lesser extent, Leavitt's fired, Kelly to ND, Butch to Cincy, and Gill to Kansas. Talk about turning the college football world upside down.

The Mora firing sorta came out of nowhere. Yeah, Seattle had a bad year, but he wasn't one of the oft-discussed coaches when firings came up. This is sounding more and more like Seattle had a backdoor (heh) negotiation going on and canned Mora once a deal was struck...in principle anyway.
