Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class

At the last QB luncheon, OSU coaches stated 18 as their target number. Obviously they're counting on some attrition.

If that's true, then let's have some fun:

We currently have an availability of 16 scholarships with 14 commits, leaving two open. If the staff says 18, then that's two more, or four open.

Cordale Scott is as good as verballed (at least in my mind), so that's one.

Obviously you bank one for if/when Pryor commits, so that's two.

Quite a few folks are saying Mobley may have committed (I personally don't have any direct knowledge of that), so for the sake of discussion, let's say he has committed and for some reason is delaying announcement.

Now that's three of the four, leaving one more. Who do we go after the hardest, and who eventually gets it?

Honestly, I think Jenkins, Laurinaitis, Gholston and Boone all stay and Freeman goes pro. I also believe that scholarships are reviewed on a year-to-year basis and Thoma may not have one next year (his JR year) to make room for the '08 recruit, then it wouldn't surprise me for him to get one in two years for his SR year.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the 2 that we need, right? Scott, Pryor, Mobley and Jenkins are my final 4 to make it 18 (and I am sure that's what everybody thinks right now)... and then we'll see about an extra in case one "opens up."

Gholston and Freeman are as good as gone, and I also highly doubt Jenkins returns. Laurinaitis is 60/40 gone in my mind, and Boone is 50/50. Gholston, Jenkins, and Laurinaitis project near or at the top of their positions in the draft. You just don't turn that sort of money down. Freeman and Boone will get offered enough to make bailing early worth their while.

As for Thoma, while scholarships are a year-to-year thing, JT doesn't give coveted scholarships to non-senior walk-ons unless he intends to continue to give that same walk-on a scholarship. Why do you think that up until this year all his scholarships to walk-ons had gone nearly exclusively to seniors? You think giving a scholarship to a walk-on one year and then not giving it to him the next is going to sit well with that player? How motivated do you think he'll be?

Now we can say it's official (I'll update the chart later today). Down to one "official" and a total of three "projected" scholarships available. I still think Cordale is as good as verballed and we still save one for Pryor, so we remain with one scholarship floating around...

Freeman has his degree and a child to support. i think it's possible he declares for the draft. One more year woould be great for him though. Little Animal, Vernon, Malcom are probably gone. they should all be first rounders. JT encourages 1st rounders to leave. Too many $$ at stake. Boone could leave as well. Is probably a 2nd or 3rd rounder. I think in the end 4 leave. Freeman, Little Animal, Jenkins, and Gholston IMO.
