Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class

I also thought I read somewhere that Lukens was given a medical waiver and would not count against the 85.
With Lukens being a 5th year senior, he's graduating after this year and won't give us an extra scholarship to give to a player for the upcoming '08 recruiting class. Just gives us another scholarship for a senior walk-on this year.

One less for next year? Lisko won't be out of eligibility until after 2008.

This from Tress in his presser.

Per Adam Jardy's Scout article yesterday, they've received them.

In addition, Tressel said three former walk-ons have been granted scholarships. They are senior offensive lineman Daniel Dye from Napoleon, Ohio, senior long snapper Dimitrios Makridis from Warren (Ohio) Harding and junior wide receiver David Lisko from Hilliard (Ohio) Darby.

Made numerous updates. Corrected jersey numbers for Schwartz and Miller along with Schwartz to WR per BGriffBuckeye's observations. Also added Thoma's scholarship, and re-tallied the columns (forgot to do that when I added the previous three walk-on scholarships).

Note that with the scholarships to walk-ons Lisko and Thoma, our available pool drops by two. We now have 15 total scholarships, instead of 17, to give to the 2008 class...with 11 current commits we have only four left to give (of course, tranfers and early departures would increase that).

I do wonder why Tress gave Lisko and Thoma their scholarships this year, in a year where we need all the spots for the '08 class we can get. Why not next year, when there will be close to 25 open?

Possibly because it was more important to Jim Tressel to provide the benefits of a scholarship this year to two young men who had earned it. JT may have thought of it as simply the right thing to do. And based on everything we know of him, JT believes that doing the right thing is something that has its own value.

Being fair to his players and taking good care of the walk-ons who work hard has got to be a big motivating factor for all walk-ons. Having motivated guys on the scout team helps the starters prepare; and having guys work hard will provide us with a late-blooming gem once in a while.
