Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class

Was also wondering about Thoma's status. Says he's a converted walk-on...is that something that carries over to the following year for sure...or is it just a year-by-year thing?

I think MB said it best earlier in this thread and I agree with his points:

As for Thoma, while scholarships are a year-to-year thing, JT doesn't give coveted scholarships to non-senior walk-ons unless he intends to continue to give that same walk-on a scholarship. Why do you think that up until this year all his scholarships to walk-ons had gone nearly exclusively to seniors? You think giving a scholarship to a walk-on one year and then not giving it to him the next is going to sit well with that player? How motivated do you think he'll be?

Guys, I'm just not getting your math.

(Rising) SR 21 (with Gholston gone)
JR 18
SO 26 (both RS and otherwise)

This equals 65, which allows a signing class of 20 even with Devon Lyons remaining on board. So where does 19 come from???

22 Seniors (counting Curtis Terry - who always gets left out of counting for some reason)
18 Juniors
26 Sophomores

With no one else leaving gives us 19

You guys need to check your counting skills. There are 22 seniors-to-be eligibility-wise, not counting Terry:

  1. Boeckman
  2. M. Wells
  3. Nicol
  4. B. Smith
  5. Dukes
  6. Lyons
  7. Robiskie
  8. Mitchum
  9. Person
  10. Rehring
  11. Skinner
  12. Boone
  13. Abdallah
  14. Wilson
  15. Freeman
  16. Laurinaitis
  17. Lane
  18. Jenkins
  19. Patterson
  20. O'Neal
  21. Pretorius
  22. Trapasso

Unless there's a transfer I've overlooked...

So with Terry coming back, 22 juniors, 18 sophomores, 11 redshirt freshmen, and 15 true freshmen, that's 67 returning scholarships. Add the incoming class (17 so far) and that gives 84 schollies. It looks like you didn't count Terry when figuring out the spots left.

I understand the Thoma comments, but I believe it's understood his scholarship is conditional.

Thoma could have gotten a scholarship at another university had he wanted too, but he choose to be a walk-on at tOSU. If we over-sign by 1 player I think they would put Thoma back on walk-on status and utilize his scholarship, and I don't think Thoma would become less motivated. Other schools use this process all of the time.

And, in circumstances like last year, if we want to bank scholarships for future classes, why wouldn't you give a walk-on a free ride for a year, with the understanding it may not be available the following year? It wouldn't make sense to only use 83 or 84 scholarships.

I didn't count Terry.

Won't Wilson get a medical redshirt?? I used a combination of your sheet and one I do myself. I have 22 seniors counting Terry (which I am not sure why you would not count him), 19 juniors counting Wilson (assume medical redshirt), 26 soph and fresh, and 17 incoming.

I will admit I am not the best counter in the world but that should equal 84 ships with 1 left. Now I keep track but one thing I have learned over my 10-15 years of following this is there will be SHIPS. In fact as tight as it is now we will still be able to give out 3-4 ships to walkons in the fall. These things always have a way of working out.

Thanks, guys. The chart was corrected after my post to reflect the 23 rising seniors (from which one must subtract Vernon Gholston, for a net of 22). Perhaps Curtis Terry was previously omitted from the chart; I can't say. The "new math" results in 19 available scholarship slots, which does not account for additional potential available schollies from Jon Thoma and/or possible transfer(s).

I believe medical Red-shirts apply to what would be a kid's 5th year (or 6th, if he was a RS as a Freshman (or any other year, I guess, but you know what I mean).
