Schedule Openings in 2017-2019 -- Who do you want to see Ohio State play?

So I was debating whether or not to put this in the Future Football Schedules thread, but thought this might generate enough discussion to warrant its own thread (mods, please feel free to merge with the above thread if you feel that would be best)

Starting in 2016, Big Ten schools will schedule 9 conference games and 3 non-conference games. Ohio State has a non-conference game opening in its football schedule for 2017, 2018, & 2019. You always hear about how there is always “no one” to play power-5 wise if you don’t schedule out far enough. I decided to looks back at future team schedules almost a month ago (July 5th) and see what power-5 teams (a) had an open date on their schedule for those three years and (b) see which of those teams had an open/bye week that coincided with Ohio State’s open/bye weeks. This is what I came up with:

(mind you, this is as of July 5th, so this is obviously subject to change and there may have been recent match-up announcements I may have missed. Below also includes Alabama/FSU and Alabama/Louisville, which were recently announced. I hope this is easy to understand and follow, as my brain’s explanation doesn’t always make it easy for others to follow)

2017 Schedule

Non-Conf: Oklahoma (9/9), UNLV (9/23)
6 home games this year for Ohio State, so looking to add a 7th
Open/Bye weeks: 9/16 (likely future game-- week between Oklahoma & UNLV) & 10/21 (unlikely future game-- bye week between @Nebraska & PSU)

Teams with coinciding open/bye weeks:
Pac 12
Arizona (10/21)

ACC
Boston College (10/21 possibly- we play in ‘23-’24)
Florida State (both- plays Alabama)
Louisville (both)
Syracuse (both possibly)
Georgia Tech (10/21- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Miami FL (both)
North Carolina (both)

Big 12
TCU (10/21 possibly- we play in ‘18-’19)
West Virginia (both)

SEC
Florida (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Kentucky (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
South Carolina (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Tennessee (10/21)
Vanderbilt (10/21)
Arkansas (both possibly)
Ole Miss (10/21)
Texas A&M (10/21)

It would be really interesting (though doubtful) to see if they could get one of those above teams to do a 1-time home game, like we were able to get with Oregon State for 2018. More realistic would be to schedule a home and away with a team for ‘17 & ‘19 (you’ll see why below), which would sacrifice a 6 game home season one of those years for a quality power 5 opponent.

2018 Schedule

Non Conf: Oregon State (9/1), @TCU (9/15)
6 home games this year for Ohio State, so looking to add a 7th
Open/bye weeks: 9/22 (likely future game-- week between @TCU & @PSU) & 10/27 (unlikely future game-- bye week between @Purdue and Nebraska)

Teams with coinciding open/bye weeks:
Pac 12
Oregon (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year- we play in ‘20-’21)
Stanford (both)
USC (both- plays Texas & ND)

ACC
Boston College (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Florida State (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Louisville (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Syracause (10/27) - has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Duke (both possibly)
Georgia Tech (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
North Carolina (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Pittsburgh (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Virginia (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)

Big 12
Kansas (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Kansas State (both)
Texas Tech (both)
West Virginia (both)

SEC
Florida (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Georgia (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Kentucky (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Missouri (both)
South Carolina (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Tennessee (both)
Vanderbilt (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Alabama (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Arkansas (both possibly- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year- plays scUM)
Auburn (both- has 4 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
LSU (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Mississippi St (both- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Ole Miss (both- has 4 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Texas A&M (both- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)

This year is probably moot, since the opponent is likely to be a non power-5 school, since the likely open date being between TCU & PSU. You gotta think this would be the year of the three we would most likely see a mid-season non-conference game, especially if they do go with another power-5 team.

2019 Schedule

Non Conf: Cincinnati (9/7),TCU (9/21)
6 home games this year for Ohio State, so looking to add a 7th
Open/bye weeks: 8/31 (likely future game- 1st game of season), 10/12 (unlikely future game- bye week between Michigan State & @Northwestern), & 11/2 (unlikely future game- bye week between Wisconsin & Maryland

Teams with coinciding bye/open weeks:
Pac 12
Oregon (10/12 & 11/2 - we play in ‘20-’21)
Oregon State (10/12 & 11/2 - we play in ‘18)
Washington State (all 3 weeks possibly- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Arizona (10/12 & 11/2)
Arizona State (all 3 weeks- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Utah (10/12 & 11/2)

North Carolina (all 3 weeks- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)

Oklahoma State (10/12 & 11/2)
Texas (10/12 & 11/2- we play in ‘22-’23)
West Virginia (all 3 weeks)

SEC
Florida (all 3 weeks- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Georgia (all 3 weeks- has 2 spots to fill in schedule for this year)
Kentucky (all 3 weeks- has 3 spots to fill in schedule for this year)

Texas A&M (8/31 & 10/12 possibly)

You can see why getting a power-5 opponent for a home and away for ‘17 & ‘19 would be a nice option. It would be sacrificing a 6-game home schedule one of those years, but Ohio State should be able to command a really nice paycheck for having to visit an away stadium, especially just after having won the most recent national championship. Based on everything listed above, these would be options for home and away opponents for ‘17 & ‘19 (in alphabetic order):

Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Boston College (play in ‘23-’24)
Florida
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Kentucky
Louisville
Miami FL
North Carolina
Ole Miss
South Carolina
Syracuse
Tennessee
Texas A&M
Vanderbilt
Virginia
West Virginia

A lot of those are SEC schools, which would be a HIGH profile non-conference game that would get eyes all around the country, almost no matter which SEC team they played, but the question is whether any of those SEC teams would actually leave the south for a true away game in the Horseshoe. The ACC schools had a number of open dates (like they SEC, they're not going to a 9-conference game slate) and reside in fertile recruiting territory that wouldn't be bad for an away game. Florida State would be a great marquee game, though one of the other teams might be more beneficial as a fill-in game since we already have a marquee game for each of those years. WVU is the only Big 12 team possibility, due to conference teams loading up years ahead of time on cupcake teams for the most part. It would be interesting to see if Ohio State would even consider playing WVU (and others like Louisville, Kentucky, etc.) with them being so close to home (for recruiting reasons, not much to gain), but you could also see why we might play them BECAUSE they are so close to home (OSU fans loading the stadium). Arizona is the only Pac 12 team that would be an option, though it would be a fun storyline to see Ohio State vs. Rich Rod again, and we know the OSU contingent in AZ would show up en masse.

Realistially, who do you want to see Ohio State schedule for '17, '18, & '19?

SEC won't come up north so that would never happen.... plus a couldn't take a whole summer of SEC talk. Being selfish and although we play in 22-23 I would say Texas. That off season before the 05 game at the shoe' with the Texas fans (xrayrandy etc) was a lot of fun!

That game was awesome too and I will always remember nearly passing out from screaming so hard after AJ Hawk picked off Vince Young

I'd take 2017: TAMU. 2018: Pitt 2019: TAMU. All teams solely for recruiting purposes. Beat them and make a spectacle for their in state recruits. And play the away against aTm at Jerry World, no sense in going to the dump that is College Station. And Pitt to give shit a heart attack after we drop 50+ on them!
