Satellite Radio (XM, Sirius, and Stations) MERGED

Thinking again about cancelling. I didn't realize there was another price hike taking effect in the new year - an extra $2/month.

Since I started subscribing in 2004, my rate has risen from $13/month to nearly $21/month.

The main problem I face with cancelling is that XMU is my lifeline for new music. I don't use the receiver in my car all that much anymore, and I could probably stand to get a new FM transmitter that's compatible with my iPhone rather than having the extra equipment. I'm not sure where to go for internet radio that fits my tastes. I'm gonna have to give some things a try. I'm reluctant to use things like Pandora or Slacker Radio - it's a little too random for me. I want something a little more... curated. And perhaps a DJ - are they really so bad? I have the NPR and TuneIn Radio apps, I might try streaming some of the regular broadcast stations through there. It's going to be a lot of trial and error I guess. You go from FM radio here in Cincy where you have no choices except country and cock rock, to internet radio where you have millions of choices it seems. It's a little overwhelming.

Anyway, I thought I'd bring up the price hike, especially for those of you on quarterly or annual plans who haven't had it hit yet.

Have you tried Grooveshark? Pretty sweet site that lets you make your own playlists.

http://grooveshark.com/

You could also keep up with what's current on Sirius by going to this site and seeing what they have played all day, then adding them to your Grooveshark playlist to check them out.

http://www.dogstarradio.com/search_playlist.php

(That dogstar site seems to be down right now for some reason, but when it's working, it gives you a song by song list for any block of time you input.)

Then you could find an app for your iphone that plays your grooveshark playlists and use it in your car. I use Tinyshark for my Droid.

I'm not sure if any of this will help, but it's a thought.

I have called them no less than 6 times since I got my car in 2008 to talk with them about the pricing. I have straight up said that if they can't help me, then I have to drop the service. Time and time again, I have been offered introductory rates. The last one I got was $60 for a year.
I bet dollars to pesos it works for you.

I've done it several times as well with success. However, last time there customer service was pretty crappy, but that's another story . . .

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I just dug out the old demo receiver I bought way back when I worked at RadioShaft. They hadn't deactivated it, so when I figured that out I suspended my account and used the demo receiver for free. That lasted for a couple years, but they cut me off about 18 months ago and I re-activated my regular account. Well, I just checked it again and that demo receiver is back up and running for whatever reason. I can cancel and still have an active radio! Fuck you and your price hikes, Sirius!

I've been using the app "TuneIn Radio" for some time to listen to thousands of free Internet radio stations. I highly recommend it for the office on an iPod or iPhone. I like the RadioIO network and GotRadio Network for multiple genres
I'm getting a year trial with my new car but I'm not willing to pay for SirisXM. Besides the cars radio has a iPod hookup built in! :tongue2:

If I give you my account number, will you call them for me? I suck at lying.

Well, after finding no other streaming options that suited me I called in to bitch and threaten to cancel. Even though I found that the demo receiver I had was still active on another account, that wasn't going to cover my form of use, which is thru my iPhone, docked in my office. My call was successful, and I'm now paying just 1/3 of what I was being charged before. I'll gladly pay for Sirius - I feel that I get something with them that I can't get anywhere else. I just didn't want to pay too much and continue getting nickeled and dimed.

Also, I just discovered that they have added a whole other indie station that I wasn't even aware of - Classic College Radio. I had to change the channel from Jenny Eliscu playing another damn Lana Del Rey song on XMU, and found this station playing Modest Mouse, GBV, Bowie, Velocity Girl & Dead Kennedys consecutively. YES!

They were playing a Shins concert from SXSW earlier today on XMU, so that was a nice listen.

I see your Jenny Eliscu and raise you a Madison from Alt Nation. Holy hell she's obnoxious.

Stern rules. There is no other reason for radio.
I've lost interest in his show since Artie Lange left. He's just a neutered version of what he was even 4-5 years ago. Not filling that chair has been an awful mistake. I find the 'America's Got Talent' talk and endless pet talk a horrible bore. Days go by that I don't even chuckle once anymore. It used to be on in my car nonstop. Now, I rarely listen. He should have hung it up after his last contract, IMO.

My Volvo came with a 6 month trial that expired two weeks ago, and I haven't even bothered to call to have my lifetime subscription I bought back in 2007 transferred over.
