Satellite Radio (XM, Sirius, and Stations) MERGED

I had them put me on a month-to-month subscription when the merger went through because I had listened to XMU before and knew it sucked. I had a sneaking suspicion all along that Left of Center was going to get absorbed in the suckitude.

The only reason I'm still holding out is because it's looking like this is looking like a much more promising year for new releases, so it could get better in the coming weeks and months. At least if I do decided to cancel I won't be out several months' worth of charges.

I also do the month to month thing with Sirius, but my commute is basically non-existent (10-15 min max) so I rarely get my money's worth from my car receiver, but listen frequently online. When I called to cancel because of the online charge, they gave me a free month's worth of service... I'll just keep calling back every month.

The merger blows... how can you merge and then not give me everything that both companies had? I understand if you want to eliminate some content and redundant channels, but this was supposed to be good for me, so when does the goodness start?

Damn mormons dontchaknow.

Oh, yah.

Listening to some college games, it's also given me a much fresher perspective on how good some announcers are. Try listening to an Oklahoma (football OR basketball) or Texas Tech (basketball) game sometime. Fucking awful.

XM/Sirius Radio Question

I was given a subscription to XM radio for Xmas this year and was wondering if anyone had experience setting it up on their own.

Basically I travel a lot for work (lots of rental cars) and rather than set it up in my personal car, wanted to be able to bring the new XM radio with me on my trips.

Will placing the satellite signal inside the car (as opposed to the outside of the car) make a big difference?

Can anyone provide insight?

Inside a car should be no problem; however, it definitely is a matter of line of sight. My player came with my car so I'm not entirely certain if there is any other capability with the mobile units. All I know is that once I pull the car into the garage, the signal is gone.

I use my iPod touch and XM Skydock, which has a 10-12 foot chord and a 2x2 GPS receiver. Occasionally we put it in the wife's car and simply set it on the dash, it is good MOST of the time. They'll be times where it will get choppy but most of the time it's fine.

Absolutely love my XM. I installed the antenna on the inside of the vehicle and have had no problems whatsoever.

You should give internet radio a try with a Squeezebox Touch! If you have high speed internet service, streaming internet radio sounds as good as Siris/XM and is F_R_E_E_! More stations, too!

I've heard of that, but when I'm in my office or working on the computer I use jango. I have unlimited skips and they do a decent job of keeping all my favorite bands in rotation on the channels I've chosen.

Thinking again about cancelling. I didn't realize there was another price hike taking effect in the new year - an extra $2/month.

Since I started subscribing in 2004, my rate has risen from $13/month to nearly $21/month.

The main problem I face with cancelling is that XMU is my lifeline for new music. I don't use the receiver in my car all that much anymore, and I could probably stand to get a new FM transmitter that's compatible with my iPhone rather than having the extra equipment. I'm not sure where to go for internet radio that fits my tastes. I'm gonna have to give some things a try. I'm reluctant to use things like Pandora or Slacker Radio - it's a little too random for me. I want something a little more... curated. And perhaps a DJ - are they really so bad? I have the NPR and TuneIn Radio apps, I might try streaming some of the regular broadcast stations through there. It's going to be a lot of trial and error I guess. You go from FM radio here in Cincy where you have no choices except country and cock rock, to internet radio where you have millions of choices it seems. It's a little overwhelming.

Anyway, I thought I'd bring up the price hike, especially for those of you on quarterly or annual plans who haven't had it hit yet.

I have called them no less than 6 times since I got my car in 2008 to talk with them about the pricing. I have straight up said that if they can't help me, then I have to drop the service. Time and time again, I have been offered introductory rates. The last one I got was $60 for a year.
I bet dollars to pesos it works for you.
