San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...ers-sits-national-anthem-prior-preseason-game

Colin Kaepernick has every right to voice his opinion, just like I have the right to express my opinion that he is a clueless, spoiled clown that has no concept of how good he has it. If he truly has such disdain for the U.S., nobody is forcing him to stick around and collect $125 million to be a mediocre quarterback. I'm sure there are more than a few refugees fleeing countries where they face daily persecution and oppression that would trade places with him.

In short, f*ck that guy.
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color," he said after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
The only places where there are "bodies in the street" are places like Chicago where Blacks kill Blacks at a rate 20 times that of police. Maybe you can donate some of that $125 million to buy bullet-proof vests for residents of high-violence neighborhoods...else, fuck off and move your oppressed ass to some "non-oppressive" country...

I find it completely and overwhelmingly bizarre that when someone voices their opinion on our government that people suggest they leave the goddamned country.

KKK Member: The UNITED STATES SHOULD BE MORE WHITE AND ALL BLACKS SHOULD LEAVE THE COUNTRY!"

Most White People on FB: "Speech is protected whether you agree with it or not. I don't think like that but he has a right to say it"

BLM Supporter: I want the system fundamentally changed so Cops don't get away with killing unarmed Black people and in protest I will not honor the flag as is my right as an American"

Most White People on FB: If you don't like it, move to some other country you ungrateful PIECE OF SHIT"

At the same time, he said something and the people who don't like what he said can react however they want (don't buy his jersey, don't watch the 49ers, don't watch the NFL, root against him forever- whatever) within the limits of the law- no one should shoot him or anything.

The other obnoxious reaction is when people say something stupid and then cry that their first amendment rights are being violated when a chunk of society responds to the stupidity by punishing them- within the limits of the law- in some way.

"And the sad truth is this -- Colin Kaepernick's decision not to stand for the national anthem, at least thus far, isn't supported by any actionable or coherent political belief or tangible call to action. Worse than that, it's not just an insult to many people in this country, it's an insult to anyone with a working brain.

Put simply, Colin Kaepernick is a fucking idiot. "

I don't FB but as a white, middle aged, veteran, male let me say I fully support his right to say whatever the fuck he likes as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of anyone else.

My personal opinion is that more people should say fuck you to the government (I wish they were more effective with their platform than this nimrod).

You are, however, going to get backlash when you make the statement using symbols like the flag or the National Anthem because many people associate those with veterans more than bureaucrats and politicians (may they all rot in hell).

No different than some hippie burning a flag imo.

Show us where anyone in the government said that Kaepernick should leave the country.

KKK Member: The UNITED STATES SHOULD BE MORE WHITE AND ALL BLACKS SHOULD LEAVE THE COUNTRY!"
Totally irrelevant to what Kaepernick said or did.

Most White People on FB: "Speech is protected whether you agree with it or not. I don't think like that but he has a right to say it"
Which is exactly right. That's how fucking free speech works. Kaepernick can say what he wants, and people can rip him to shreds for saying it.

BLM Supporter: I want the system fundamentally changed so Cops don't get away with killing unarmed Black people and in protest I will not honor the flag as is my right as an American"
So, once every other week or so some fucking dipshit cop--white or black--kills a black kid--armed or unarmed--and the entire country "oppresses" people of color.

Most White People on FB: If you don't like it, move to some other country you ungrateful PIECE OF [Mark May]"
"Most" white people? Sorry, but on my feed right now I have six posts concerning Kaepernick's actions: Three by White guys and one each by a Black guy, a Hispanic guy, and a half-Asian half White guy, all of whom are totally against what he did and said. So, keep it up with your white-guilt complex...

Alex Boone on ex-teammate Colin Kaepernick: 'Show some respect'

While a former teammate who caught passes from Colin Kaepernick defended the San Francisco 49ers quarterback's decision not to stand for the national anthem, a former teammate who blocked for Kaepernick didn't see it that way.

Minnesota Vikings guard Alex Boone, who played five seasons with Kaepernick in San Francisco before leaving in free agency last spring, called it "shameful" that Kaepernick did not stand for the national anthem on Aug. 26 against the Green Bay Packers, adding "we probably would have had a problem on the sideline" had the quarterback done it while Boone had still been his teammate.

While Boone acknowledged that Kaepernick "can do whatever he wants," he added, "there's a time and a place. Show some respect."

Vikings guard Alex Boone, who played five seasons with Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco, said the two "probably would have had a problem on the sideline" had the quarterback sat the national anthem while Boone was a member of the 49ers.

"You should have some f---ing respect for people who served, especially people that lost their life to protect our freedom," said Boone, whose brother J.J. served with the Marines in Iraq. "We're out here playing a game, making millions of dollars. People are losing their life, and you don't have the common courtesy to do that. That just drove me nuts.

I will respect Kaepernicks right to express his beliefs while being disappointed in the manner in which he has chosen to do it. I applaud him for taking a stand and bringing attention to a cause he believes in.

I also think he's playing into the current socio-political climate of anger/rage which is largely overstated in this country due to events of the past 12-18 months and the caustic vitriol spewed by presidential candidates, and from a purely football perspective he's making himself unemployable. Teams (and teammates) will mostly say they respect his rights, but they don't want this scrutiny.

Colin Kaepernick: 'I'll continue to sit'

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem in each of the team's three preseason games and said he plans to continue to do so until he sees real change when it comes to racial oppression in the United States.

"Yes, I'll continue to sit," Kaepernick said. "I'm going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me this is something that has to change. When there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...rnick-sit-national-anthem-sees-change-america

What anyone does "on their own time" is usually their own business as long as it a legal activity; however, there are very few employers in the US that will allow an employee to protest controversial social and/or political issues while "on the clock". This is especially true when you are wearing the employer's uniform, on national TV, the employer's product sales (i.e. financial success) is subject to public approval/support, and the issue that you are protesting or actions of your protest are not whelmingly supported by the public, etc.

Combined with that and the fact he is grossly underpaid for his production (i.e. football worth to the team) he is definitely a candidate for the "wavier wire" if not this season then next when his contract is not fully guaranteed. Not only is he trying to make himself unemployable in the NFL he just took himself out of contention for any commercial endorsements too.

With that being said if (in the unlikely event that) he happens to have a "Hall of Fame" season and leads the team to a Super Bowl win all will be forgiven.

+1 to all of this - and I also think there's no way he would be doing this if he was still a starting QB.
