Sam "L" McGuffie (Olympic Bobsled Team)

This feels to me like one we'll regret in the future. I can just picture Musburger in the pre-game intros, "He wanted to go to OSU with his friend J.B. Shugarts, but they didn't think he was big enough. Now he's out to get revenge, it's Michigan versus Ohio State..."

I hope I am wrong, and I have enough faith in the staff to believe that Tress has reason enough to go another way, likely his failed trip up to Columbus for camp.

Very excited to land McGuffie. I'm not sure he will ever be a feature back, but he could be a Brian Westbrook/Reggie Bush type of player (not saying he'll be that good) where if you give him the ball enough on runs, screens, slot passes he can produce a lot. And man he can fly.

Yea, but he didn't want to come to OSU, so I dont really get what you're saying... McGuffie was always Michigan, anyone who thinks he would have jumped on an OSU offer needs to take off their scarlet colored sweater vest and blinders..

From earlier in the thread:

"From what Sam is telling staff and JB Shugarts, I wouldn't count him as a lock... Awful lot of pandering for an offer from Sam..."

"I want an offer from Ohio State too," said McGuffie, who benches 340 pounds, squats 500 and power cleans 305. "I'm really waiting for that offer too... It would be a hard decision if I got an offer from Ohio State and USC."

Sounds to me like he wanted to go to OSU or at least was very interested, but didn't receive it for one reason or another, likely him not coming to camp. Am I mistaken?

When was the last time Michigan had a back similar to McGuffie?

Hart and Grady seem to be grind it out, in between the tackles, where McGuffie has a TON more speed than they do.

It will be interesting to see how he turns out.

Maurice Wells was kinda like that for us. Unbelievable speed, lightning in a bottle-type. The MoWells saga hasn't played itself out, so I'll reserve my judgement.

I wonder if Michigan can make better use of McGuffie/Wells talents.

The thing I like about McGuffie is we can line him up anywhere. Backfield, slot, whatever. Plus, he will attract a lot of single coverage on passing downs because of the other really good recruits we have either on the team right now or coming in. Guys like Toney Clemons, Greg Mathews, Junior Hemingway etc....I really hope Lloyd takes the brakes off the offense and goes into a 5 wide with Mallett at QB, McGuffie, Mathews, Hemingway, Clemons and Stonum split wide. Try to stop it

I don't recall Michigan going 5 wide with that kind of talent before. That's what I meant. Jim Tressel is an amazing coach and he's done a phenomenal job against Michigan, but it will be very interesting to see what he devises to stop these playmakers.

Wolverines nab nation?s No. 1 all-purpose running back

Michigan football received a verbal commitment from Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair High School running back Sam McGuffie on Sunday.

McGuddie chose Michigan over Texas A&M and is rated as Rivals.com's No.1 all-purpose running back.

"The coaches there recruited me (hard), especially coach (Fred) Jackson, the running backs coach," McGuffie told local reporters. "They told me that if I go there that we'll be a team to be reckoned with."
The 6-foot, 188-pound McGuffie is super athletic.

Scout.com did a photo shoot with McGuffie and J.B. Shugarts, a Klein (Texas) High School offensive tackle who committed to Ohio State, that showed McGuffie doing a mid-air somersault over Shugarts' head.

But McGuffie's not all flash. His numbers from last year look like those Mike Hart produced in high school: more than 3,100 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns -- in one season.

He has several highlights on the web. To check them out, click this link
