S Mike Doss (3x All B1G, 3x 1st Team All-American, National Champion, OSU HOF, CFB HOF)

Turning down NFL money, not being Bill Davis, and not being Zach Smith.

I’d like to think coaching requirements are a bit tougher than that.
For a QA assistant? I mean, 3x AA gotta be enough credentials for an entry level position

I mean, being named Zach Smith was enough credentials to coach under one of the best coaches in cfb history so....

Are there limits on quality control coaches? Because Saban had about 4,000 of them a few years ago.

I see little wrong with considering Mike for a low level, grad assistant type of job.
My issue is more so with the logic. Just because it worked with Hartline, and because we all like him.....those aren't reasons.

I think it's foolish to think it will end the same way. Unless there's a limit on entry-level guys, or they already know how it will go (from last time), I don't see much of a downside in considering it. be as successful because Brian was.

Does anyone know what a QC assistant typically actually does? That might help in determining if Doss is likely to be good at it. Regardless, it seems like OSU has little risk in giving him a shot at it and there's certainly evidence that he has a solid background of football knowledge and experience to go with his strong work ethic and love of Ohio State. This is a far cry from idiocy like "ZOMG! Spiels for head coach!".

But that logic is more sound if you look closer and see more similarity between Doss and Hartline specifically. These were both very smart players here at OSU, who then had respectable NFL careers and have both been successful in their post-playing lives (from what brief bit I could glean from a wuick search on Doss).

Being a smart former player who is a great role model for today's players is not the worst qualification for getting onto the very bottom rung of the ladder at OSU.

As has been said, you can have as many non-coach assistants as you like, so there's really no harm in giving a true legend like Doss an internship and see if he's willing/able to put in the work.

I'd take Doss for DC over Mattison, though.
You're an asshole!

I don't see why Doss wouldn't be at least as good as Hartline. Is he dumber? No. Was he less talented? No. Did he alligator arm passes from a QB he didn't like? Don't think so.

I'm just saying if Hartline gets that opportunity, Doss most certainly should. Especially if there's no limit to QA assistants. What's the downside?

I mean....there's no NCAA limit. I doubt Day is going to want 80 QA assistants, so at some point he'd be taking the spot of somebody else. Though I'd agree at that level we aren't winning or losing games based on hiring Mike Doss over Joe Smith (no relation to Zach).
