Bulldogs head Stark High School HOF Class of 2010

A heavy ?90s flavor pervades the Class of 2010 that awaits induction into the Stark County High School Football Hall of Fame.

McKinley?s Thom McDaniels, Kenny Peterson and Mike Doss join GlenOak?s Derek Fox as prominent 1990s names that are part of the class. Massillon?s Steve Luke and GlenOak?s Mark Murphy, representing the 1960s and ?70s, also were elected.

The group will be inducted in July at Skyland Pines.
Doss had a year left at McKinley, and it was a big one. He starred at defensive back and running back for a team that won another state title before reuniting with Peterson and eventually helping Ohio State win a national title.

Doss said he learned at an early age that being a gifted athlete wasn?t enough. Being an underclassman on a McKinley team that included Peterson and a stellar group of seniors helped drive him.

?It was a personal challenge to go above and beyond what was required,? Doss said. ?I always looked it as a challenge to raise my level of play and earn respect. I always wanted to be the best of the best.?

Mayor William J. Healy II (left) and Canton Jaycees President Derek Gordon (right) stand Thursday with former McKinley and Ohio State football player Michael Doss at the Canton Club Event Center. The Canton Jaycees on Thursday presented Doss with its 71st annual Distinguished Service Award.

CANTON ?

The Canton Jaycees presented their 71st annual Distinguished Service Award to former McKinley High School football star Michael Doss during a banquet at the downtown Canton Club Event Center on Thursday night.

The civic group recognized Doss? work through his charitable foundation on local community service projects. The Jaycees said that includes an annual football camp at Fawcett Stadium for nearly 200 children ages 8 to 12 and an annual Back-to-School block party for Canton children, where they receive school supplies, food, drinks, free haircuts and get to participate in a talent show and flag football games.

The Jaycees said Doss also distributes gifts during the holidays and has served as a ?motivational speaker? for Canton City School District students.

Receiving a check for $250 from Canton Jaycees to help fund his foundation, Doss said the award definitely was an honor.

?I wanted to be a light for these kids, and see (that) they can dream big and have their wishes and wants come true in life,? he said. ?I?m (nearly) 29 years old. I never thought I?d be receiving a community award.?

Doss stressed that although he is getting the recognition, many other people helped on the projects.

?I just want to thank each one of you guys for the support through the years,? Doss said, holding up the arrowhead-shaped glass plaque.

?I think it?s exciting,? said Mayor William J. Healy II. ?Grew up here. ... high school star, college star. Has a Super Bowl ring. To be coming back to his community. I?m really proud of him and thankful what he?s doing for the community. Like I said, it?s about heart.?

Doss was a major contributor to the McKinley Bulldogs football team?s two consecutive state titles in the late 1990s. Playing as a defensive back for Ohio State with All-American honors, he was named the outstanding defensive player at the Fiesta Bowl in 2003, when Ohio State won the national championship.

Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2003, Doss got a professional championship ring when the Colts won Super Bowl XLI in 2007, but he didn?t play in the game due to injuries. After signing with the Minnesota Vikings and later with the Cincinnati Bengals, no team signed him for the 2009-10 season.

He works on sales and promotions for the medical products company Zimmer Ohio in Columbus and operates the Mike Doss Foundation.

Legendary Class - Mike Doss
Story: Jason Ohlson | Intro: Jackie Dee

june10.cover.doss5_web.jpg

Michael Doss might best be remembered as one of the heroes to lead the Buckeyes to their National Championship title in 2002, but he?s been quite busy since then. It was that pivotal moment in his life that he?s most proud of, and it instilled in him a spark of confidence that his football career path was headed to the next level.

Canton-born Doss grew up in the shadow of idol athlete Michael Jordan, and sharing that passion for sports, he carried his enthusiasm onto the high-school football field, leading his McKinley Bulldogs team to two state titles. A key player for The Ohio State University, an interception Doss made in the National Championship game gave the Buckeyes the lead. Drafted by the NFL in 2003, he played for the Indianapolis Colts, then moved on to the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals ?
an impressive resume for a 29-year-old. Adding to that a Super Bowl win, a multitude of career highlights and awards, and a few bumps in his personal life along the way, this free agent is a seasoned professional.

These days, Doss spends much of his time serving The Michael A. Doss Foundation, created to assist in the advancement of education and give relief to underprivileged and underserved youth. Earning a college degree was critical to Doss, and he insists on promoting education every chance he gets. Get to know a little more about this superstar player in our exclusive Q&A and photo shoot.

Anyone know if Doss has any aspirations of coaching or getting involved with Football again? I know he was still trying to play in the NFL the last couple years but not sure if he has since moved on or if he has any intentions in playing in any of the other leagues.

Mike did some coaching as a GA with the Bucks. But Mike has indicated that experience actually made him less interested in coaching because of how many hours coaches have to spend to be successful. I am also pretty sure is playing days are over.

Mike Doss
Football 1999-2002
Mike Doss, a three-time first team All-American, was co-captain of the 2002 National Championship team and was chosen as Defensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl, where Ohio State captured its first consensus national championship since 1968 with a thrilling 31-24 double-overtime victory over Miami. A three-year starter from Canton, Ohio, Doss became just the seventh three-time All-American in Ohio State history.

During his career, Doss played in 50 games, starting 40 of those contests and colleting a combined total of 331 tackles. Doss started the last two games of his freshman season and from that point on, he was a regular starter. As a sophomore, he finished the season with a team-best 94 tackles and was named to a first-team berth on The Sporting News All-America team. He also led the team in tackles as a junior with 87 total stops and was again named to a first-team spot on The Sporting News team, as well as the Walter Camp squad. As a senior, Doss collected a personal high 107 tackles and was named to first-team All-America berths on the Associated Press, Football Writers, Football Coaches, Sporting News and Walter Camp teams. A three-time All-Big Ten selection, Doss was named the 2002 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. In each of his last two years, he was a leading candidate for the Thorpe Award as the best defensive back in college football.

Following his time at Ohio State, Doss went on to play six seasons in the NFL on three teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals. Doss was a part of the 2006 Indianapolis Colts team that won Super Bowl XLI.

Doss, who earned his degree in communication, and his wife Jasmine, who also graduated from Ohio State, are raising his 8-year-old brother, Anthony Kick Jr. Doss created the Michael A. Doss Foundation and was honored with the Canton Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 2010.

Doss on earning a spot in the hall of fame so soon after his career
"I'm very humbled to have this opportunity to be inducted at such an early age. To be inducted in the first place is great, but for it to happen this soon is an honor and a privilege."

The Boss Doss (as he liked to be called apparently on-air) with Fox and then Krenzel calling in yesterday was awesome to hear on 92.3 The Fan. Listening to those three talk and joke around with one another was pretty good stuff. Mike really seemed to enjoy having the opportunity to be on the radio as well. Now that the station has a few months under their belt - they are really starting to be recognized as a quality sports radio station and are starting to bring in a lot of good guests. They had The Bank on there yesterday when he broke the Urban Meyer stuff on The Animal House with Fox and The Bull. My only gripe is that I wish they'd talk more Ohio State sports in the morning but it's like 95% Browns with Kiley and Booms. Luckily Dustin brings the Buckeye goodies in the afternoon/evening on my way home from work.
