The Bengals have cut Chris Perry, Eric Henderson, Mike Doss, Nate Lawrie and Gary Russell (via @joereedy).18 minutes ago from DestroyTwitter
They also cut safety Mike Doss
Doss, a sixth-year NFL player for 2009, joined the Bengals as a free agent on Dec. 9 of last season and played in the last three games.
DOSS-CORNER CAMP
Mike Doss and Reggie Corner, two McKinley graduates in the NFL, are teaming up to host the Stark County All-Star Football Camp. In recent years, Doss? foundation hosted the camp.
The one-day camp will be June 13 and is free for kids ages 8 to 12. That portion of the camp will run from 8 a.m. to noon. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., a camp for kids in high school will take place. That camp is $20. Lunch will be provided.
In addition to Doss and Corner, there will be former Ohio State and current NFL players on hand to assist.
Dungy, 53, stepped away from coaching in January after leading the Colts to seven straight playoff seasons, including the Super Bowl championship season of 2006. As a head coach, he didn?t really have time to be a second dad to all the players who didn?t really have a first dad.
But he was well known for embracing a life-mentor role as well as any head coach in the game. One of the players he took under his wing was safety Mike Doss, a McKinley High School graduate who played for Dungy?s Colts from 2003-06.
Dungy?s face lit up when Doss? name came up. Dungy was sitting in the Hall of Fame board room, about 100 yards from Fawcett Stadium, Doss? high school home.
?I?m very close to Mike,? Dungy said. ?Mike?s (childhood) background is more normal among NFL players than most people think. He came up the hard way. He achieved. He was a very, very driven personality.
?He had a very good career. He didn?t play 10 years in the NFL and make the $3 million to $4 million deals, but he?s one of a handful of guys who won a high school state championship, an NCAA championship and was on a team that won a Super Bowl.
?When a guy like Mike texts me to say, ?Hey, I?m getting engaged,? that kind of thing, that makes me feel good. I constantly try to talk to players about life beyond football. I think Mike?s gonna be fine.
?That?s the kind of relationships you want. That?s what makes a football team special.?
Help available
There are plenty of safety options for the Bears
July 8, 2009
By: Jeff Dickerson
During our rant last month about the precarious position the Chicago Bears find themselves in at safety, we mentioned the possibility of going outside the organization for help. This of course begs the question: Who is still out there? Here are some of noteworthy on-the-street players who may, or may not, be able to solve the Bears' quandary in the secondary. We'll list both free and strong candidates -- even though the Bears major area of concern is at free safety.
Mike Doss -- The former Ohio State star has been plagued by injuries the past three years -- missing a combined 31 regular-season games. Doss is said to be healthy and eager to get back in the league after being cut by Cinncinati. A big plus is that he knows the Cover 2 -- having played for Tony Dungy in Indianapolis. Although listed as a strong safety, Doss was required to learn both safety spots in Dungy's interchangeable system -- same as in Chicago. He was drafted by the UFL, but a source says Doss has yet to sign his contract and could still join an NFL team up until the start of the UFL's training camp in September. No doubt Doss is on several teams' "emergency" lists in the event of training camp injuries.
CONGRATULATIONS
Mike Doss, a three-time All-American at Ohio State and a key player on McKinley?s 1997 and 1998 state championship teams, is now a married man. Doss wed his longtime sweetheart, Jasmine Evans, last week.
The former second-round pick of the Indianapolis Colt was released by Cincinnati a few months ago, and he?s still a free agent. Doss? name was mentioned in connection with the Bears in a Chicago report. That team is in need of safeties.
If the Bears decide to go outside the organization for some help, the options aren't great, although I do feel Mike Doss is a quality player who can play both safety spots. Doss was drafted by the UFL, but is currently on several NFL team's emergency lists in the event of a training camp injury.
DOSS HAS A TEAM
Mike Doss hasn?t signed with an NFL team, but Ohio State?s three-time All-American does have a place to play if he so chooses. Doss was the fourth player drafted by the Orlando team in the United Football League, an upstart league with four franchises that will play in seven cities. The UFL should not be mistaken with the outfit that came to Massillon (United National Gridiron League) and never got off the ground.
The UFL has teams in Orlando, New York, Hartford, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. It also has former NFL coaches Jim Fassel, Jim Haslett, Dennis Green as coaches.
Doss can wait through NFL training camps and see if an NFL team signs him. The last word was the Bears were interested.
BACK TO SCHOOL
The Michael Doss Make a Difference Foundation is hosting its second annual Back to School Block Party from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Hartford Middle School. The foundation is giving away backpacks stuffed with school supplies on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, Doss? foundation will provide food and drinks, free haircuts for boys and hairstyling for girls, a talent show, flag football, games and $1 will get children a wristband for inflatable activities all day.
Last year?s block party was a huge success. Doss, an unsigned NFL free agent, has done a tremendous job giving back to his local community, and this is one of his best community events of the year.
