BuckeyeSports.com counts down the days until Ohio State's 2008 season opener with its list of the 50 greatest Buckeyes of all-time. The series continues today with No. 26: safety Mike Doss
DOSS VOLUNTEERING
While Mike Doss stays in shape as he waits for his phone to ring and a contract offer to come in, he's combining his work. Doss is volunteering for Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel in Ohio State's weight room.
"He's doing a great job in there," Tressel said.

TOWARD HIS FUTURE
NFL safety Mike Doss isn't just staying in shape and volunteering in the weight room at Ohio State, he's learning as well. Doss is sitting in on positional meetings and observing how coaches interact with their players because he is trying to discern if he wants a future in coaching.
"I'm just listening and watching how they reach their players," Doss said.

Doss gives back: Back-to-school event helps families

When Mike Doss was a kid, he didn't realize the burden school supplies were on his family, but he knew every August there was less money to go around.
That's why Doss' foundation, sponsors and Future Promise will give away 300 backpacks stuffed with school supplies Monday afternoon during his inaugural Back to School Block Party.
Doss is working out at Ohio State and volunteering as a coach in the weight room. He remains optimistic that he will sign with an NFL team this season. Since he didn't have to take part in a training camp, the time during the summer allowed him to organize this event he has talked about doing for the last few years.
"I wouldn't call (school supplies) taxing on the family when I was growing up," Doss said. "We did the best with what we had to make ends meet. ... I wouldn't remember the hardships, but it was something as a kid you had to have."
LOOKING TO HIS FUTURE
Doss has been wise with the money he earned in the NFL. In fact, you won't see him driving in a luxury SUV. Instead, he drives a hybrid Honda Accord. He does his grocery shopping at Giant Eagle because he loves the gas refunds.
"I'm set well financially," Doss said. "I look at the NFL ? and remember I never got that blockbuster contract ? as I came out of Canton, Ohio, and I never had anything. I'm more blessed than most people my age. I'm 27 and the NFL allowed me to get a jump-start on life. I've helped my family and taken care of my mom. What I've been able to do is have some security, but at the end of the day, when I'm finished playing, I'm going to go to work like anybody else.
"I had the fun when I was younger. I had a Mercedes and drove a nice truck. Once everything comes into perspective, it's like, 'Hey, things can't last like that forever.' At the end of the day I want to have a wife and a family and kids. One day, I'm going to be in the ground, but I want to build something for the future."
PAYING HIS WAY
Mike Doss is serious about coaching if his playing days are done. Doss made the trip to Los Angeles and was part of the Ohio State's traveling party and meetings as the Buckeyes prepared for Southern California on Saturday.
Because of NCAA rules and requirements, though, Doss had to pay his way to California, which he did. Doss is helping OSU in the weight room, and he is sitting in on defensive meetings and learning how coaches connect with players and prepare a team.
This isn't to say his playing career is over. Conversations with several players and NFL scouts all have rendered the same opinion: Doss still canplay. A problem is he isn't a cheap pickup for a team in need of a safety. Signing Doss would cost a minimum of $600,000 to $700,000 for this season alone.
Most teams are looking for depth at safety, and that's a price tag many are unwilling to pay. However, if Doss does not play again, he seems fine with moving on, and OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel has been impressed with Doss as a coach.

CINCINNATI ? The Bengals needed an enforcer for their injury-riddled secondary.
So they sifted through the NFL's salvage yard and plucked former Ohio State All-American safety Mike Doss off the scrap heap.
The sixth-year veteran
is a big hitter with a history of injuries, but the Bengals signed Doss on Tuesday, Dec. 9, hoping he can give the secondary a lift.

CINCINNATI ? Mike Doss has built a glittering football resume, winning a state championship at Canton McKinley High School, a national title at Ohio State and a Super Bowl ring with the Indianapolis Colts.
But the sixth-year NFL veteran's work isn't finished. The defensive back's next chapter is just beginning in uniform No. 44 with the Cincinnati Bengals, who signed him Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Two years after wrecking his left knee, Doss is eager to make the Bengals competitive again.
"I'm going to bring an aggressive style of play and some leadership," Doss said. "I'll help these guys out and do as much as I can these last few weeks. I'll try to be a role model and lead by example, not speak too much, just do my part and play hard. Once you showcase your play on the field, you earn the respect of your teammates and coaches."
After four years in Indianapolis (2003-06) and a season in Minnesota, Doss suddenly found himself unemployed as he worked to completely regain his health from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in '06.
"I worked out for a lot of teams and hammered the phones all season long, just waiting for the right situation," he said. "To wait this long, it's definitely a humbling experience.

Todd Porter: Emotional week for favorite son who lost mother

CLEVELAND ? Faith is what keeps Mike Doss? mind at ease. Two weeks ago today he was driving to Cincinnati for a late-season tryout with the injury-depleted Bengals. His mother was ill, and three days later she would be in the hospital.
Doss, out of football all season, signed with the Bengals. It was a perfect situation and somewhat of a football career coming full circle. The McKinley graduate and three-time Ohio State All-American was back in his home state to play in the NFL.
Life was good.
Death put it all in perspective.
Doss? mother, Diane Dixon, was buried on Friday in Canton. This was the longest week of the 27-year-old?s life. Last Sunday, about a half hour before Doss would make his 2008 season debut in Cincinnati, his mom died in a Columbus hospital.
Doss didn?t find out until after the game.
?I never thought she was seriously ill,? Doss said Sunday after a terribly cold game, but a 14-0 win, against the Browns. ?The whole situation is overwhelming just how fast it happened, and how soon it happened. It makes you realize that any given day can be your day.
?She fought as long as she could. She never complained about anything, even up to her last days on Earth. ... For her to even go to the hospital, I should?ve known it was serious, but I never thought it would end her life.?
