Learning from the pros

Smith came to Canton to help out former Ohio State teammate Mike Doss at the Doss Foundation Youth Football Camp. Smith was one of many former Buckeyes and NFL players who came to Fawcett to support Doss and his foundation.

"Troy was here last year," said Doss, a McKinley High School graduate who is now a safety with the Minnesota Vikings. "I remember telling the kids I want to introduce you to the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, and they were like 'wow.' "

About 170 children attended Saturday's camp, up from 150 last year.

"It's close to my goal of 200," Doss said. "We had to turn away a lot of older kids. I wanted to keep the 8-to-12 age group. It's easier to teach."

Tyler Everett, another former McKinley and Buckeye star, taught how to tackle properly. The Chicago Bears defensive back stuck his head into the tackling dummy, then watched the younger ones follow suit.

Others helping him out Saturday included Dustin Fox of GlenOak, Ohio State and the Eagles; Will Allen of Ohio State and the Buccaneers; Bam Childress of Ohio State and New England; Donald Strickland of the 49ers; Jason David of the Saints; Tim Jennings of the Colts; and Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie.

"The most important thing is the kids," Doss said. "It's all a free camp. The Mike Doss Foundation, it's my vision. This is the second year running, and I just hope I can keep it going.

"Someone did this for me when I was young. I just want to do it for the next group and feel like I'm giving back.

Frazier said safety Mike Doss, who is working with the first team while Darren Sharper rests his shoulder, is "real close" to a full recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

"There are certain movements and certain situations that I see where he is not quite there yet," said Frazier, who coached Doss last season in Indianapolis.

"He looks better than he did in [spring drills]," Frazier added. "He should just get better and better as he goes through things and gains more confidence in the knee. He's just about there."

MANKATO ?
When Vikings safety Mike Doss says he?s always been a winner, some fans assume it?s just another pro athlete?s self-aggrandizing statement designed to boost his own ego. A look at his career, however, says otherwise.

Doss won state championships as a junior and senior at Canton McKinley High School in Ohio and then started 40 of 50 games at Ohio State where he helped the Buckeyes win a national title in 2002. He was drafted by Indianapolis in 2002, earned a starting role right away, and went on to help the Colts win four AFC South championships. Last year, although he wasn?t around at the end due to injury, Doss and the Colts won Super Bowl XLI.

So all of this winning begs the question: Why does a free agent go from the Super Bowl champions to a team that struggled to win six games last season?

?What the Colts were last year or what the Vikings were last year doesn?t concern me,? Doss said, after a training camp practice session this week. ?I just try to go out and make teams better, make them winners.

?I?ve been a winner everywhere I?ve gone, from the Colts to ?The Ohio State? to high school. Now I?m trying to do the same here in Minnesota.?

Vikings: Six players, four spots: Battle for safety is hot
By Judd Zulgad, Star Tribune
Last update: August 05, 2007 ? 9:42 PM

Doss tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last October while playing for Indianapolis. Since the Vikings began practice on July 27, neither injury has been an issue. "They both seem at this point not to have had any setbacks and they seem to be progressing every day," said defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who was one of Doss' position coaches the past two seasons with the Colts.

This means the coaching staff could end up having some tough calls to make when rosters must be cut. So far, Sharper and Smith have received the majority of the work with the first team; Doss and Williams have been with the second unit; and Blue and Body with the third.

Doss may not only play this Sunday but may end up starting

Vikings safeties Sharper, Smith, miss practice; Williams, Doss may start
1 hour ago

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings' last line of defence is suddenly looking a little shaky.

Starting safeties Darren Sharper (hip) and Dwight Smith (hamstring) did not practise Wednesday, the first day of preparation for Sunday's game at Kansas City.

Sharper intercepted two passes and Smith also picked off one in Sunday's loss at Detroit. If they cannot go, Tank Williams and Mike Doss will get the start.

Williams and Doss have a combined 11 years of experience, but Williams is coming off a major knee injury last season and Doss has been hampered by a calf injury since the third game of the pre-season. Doss practised on Wednesday, but was still listed on the injury report.

Safety watch: Darren Sharper practiced Thursday - albeit in a limited fashion - while fellow safety Dwight Smith missed practice again. Sharper indicated afterward he is optimistic that he will play, and teammates are hopeful Smith will play, given his durability and toughness.

But the Vikings got some good news at the position as veteran Mike Doss practiced again.

"I feel healthy. I can't wait to get back out there," Doss said. "It's actually almost a year since I've been in a real regular-season game. I'm looking forward to that. It's going to be a challenge, but I think it's all going to work out for me."

Doss last played in a regular-season game on Oct. 22 against the Washington Redskins. Then with the Indianapolis Colts, he suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Doss said the secondary would lose leadership and experience if Sharper and Smith can't play. But he is confident he and Tank Williams, who have combined to start 99 NFL games, can fill the void.

"I feel myself and Tank, we'll be able to handle whatever adversity comes for us," Doss said. "I just want to continue to keep our defense rolling and playing big and fast."

Concern at safety
Strong safety Darren Sharper (hip) did limited work in Thursday's practice after sitting out Wednesday, but free safety Dwight Smith (hamstring) was unable to participate for a second consecutive day.

If Smith is unable to play Sunday, he likely would be replaced by veteran Tank Williams. Sharper was optimistic that he will be ready.

Mike Doss, another veteran safety, almost certainly will be active for the first time this season. He hasn't played since the second preseason game because of a calf injury but has been able to go full speed this week. Doss' last regular-season appearance came Oct. 22 when he suffered a knee injury playing for Indianapolis.

"I feel healthy," he said. "I can't wait to get back out there."
