OSU notebook: Hines to make start at safety

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A year ago, Jermale Hines was not allowed to play football for Ohio State. On Saturday, he will make his first career start.
That's a rapid climb for the sophomore from Cleveland Glenville, who will start at strong safety against Youngstown State in place of Kurt Coleman, who rolled an ankle in practice Monday.
Hines was forced to sit out the first five games of the 2007 season as he awaited clearance from the NCAA initial-eligibility clearinghouse.
Once he got it, he played the next week at Purdue, and ended up playing in seven games -- mostly on special teams.
"You can really draw a conclusion (how good he is) from all the time he missed last year, and yet our coaches didn't want to redshirt him because they just saw so much promise," coach Jim Tressel said. "He's such a smart player. He's just got natural instincts and understanding."
Hines (6 feet 2, 212 pounds) was switched from linebacker to safety after spring practice.
Tressel said safeties Aaron Gant and Nick Patterson will also play along with Hines and starting free safety Anderson Russell. Coleman's injury is not believed to be serious.
Hines had been listed as the starting nickel back, so that job likely will belong to Tyler Moeller.
In addition, backup cornerback Andre Amos likely will miss the game as he continues to strengthen his leg after undergoing knee surgery last year.

His skills must be so great that it negates his experience in JT's eyes. Or the other safeties are just not getting it done?

Looking forward to seeing a lot more from Jer'Male this year and going forward.
I actually thought he looked a bit lost at times Saturday (in run support and pass coverage). He has had some good hits and flashes but he is still a rookie. Still has to learn to turn his head a bit too. He'll be good though.

JohnnyCockfight;1254898; said:The projected depth chart at the O-Zone has Kurt Coleman as the starter, and Jermale Hines and Jamario O'Neal as backups at strong safety.
