S/LB Jer'Male Hines (official thread)

does it piss anyone else off that writers keep pegging Hines at SS, the most recent example being this:

Player People Are Expecting Too Much From
Safety Jermale Hines. Hines is actually one of the more experienced defenders on the field, but only a handful of his 17 starts has come at safety. Normally the team's nickel back, Hines will be called upon to play Kurt Coleman's old spot, and because Hines was fantastic in his old role, most expect him to pick up right where Coleman left off. But keep in mind that Coleman was a three-year starter, and this will be Hines' first real go-round at strong safety. Things may get iffy here and there.

let me get this off my chest real quick

HINES IS NOT REPLACING COLEMAN, HINES STARTED IN EIGHT GAMES AT FREE SAFETY ALONGSIDE COLEMAN, HINES WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY FS THIS YEAR, ORHIAN JOHNSON IS REPLACING COLEMAN AT SS

I understand that everyone assumes that Hines is more suited to play SS, and honestly I do to, but that is not the way it is, and it annoys me to no end when people keep towing that line, especially people who should know better.

Re-watching the Miami game...I think Hines could be a first rounder. Obviously his size is a plus, but he closes on the edge so quickly and is more than solid in coverage. He really has come around as the full package.

I agree...I love Hines' game. When we are in our Nickle package with Moeller on the field, we are by far the best defense in the country. This is the hardest hitting Buckeye defense I have seen in a long time and maybe ever. Hines, Moeller, Rolle, Barnett, Homan, Simon, Heyward, and Nasty Nate all lay the wood....Love this defense and I think Hines might be the most improved player over the last three seasons. He has become a true Safety.

Jermale has some serious talent, but I don't think he's a 1st rounder, IMO. He's gonna need to show a lot more ball skills to make it to the first round. Now I see him going in the 2nd, more realistically 3rd. This is a weak draft for S this year. Ahmad Black(UF) is probably the best of the best

Jer'Male was very quiet in yesterday's game, I saw that he only had 1 tackle was he injured or did they just scheme away from him.

That's exactly the way I want it to be every weekend... The second Hines leads the team in tackles is most likely not a strong day for the defense. He's the last line of defense, and i'd prefer to keep it that way!

Senior defenders: Top prospects by position
Expert By Chad Reuter

Free safety

1. Quinton Carter (Oklahoma) 6-1/195/4.57/2-3
Fighting Williams for the top spot of a weak group, Carter brings big hits, solid athleticism and ball skills to the position.

2. Deunta Williams (North Carolina) 6-1/210/4.53/3
Still out of action for the Tar Heels, Williams hasn't been able to replicate his six-interception '09 season.

3. Jaiquawn Jarrett (Temple) 6-0/197/4.57/3-4
Underrated first-team All-MAC defender with a good mix of tackling and coverage ability.

4. Jermale Hines (Ohio State) 6-2/215/4.59/4
Played closer to the line for the Buckeyes as a junior, but seems to be handling deep coverage responsibilities this season.

5. Tejay Johnson (TCU) 6-0/208/4.56/5
Can be a big hitter and is also a reliable tackler -- the traits can be mutually exclusive -- for one of the top defenses in the country.
