I think Jermale is going to take Anderson Russell's job.

I sure as heck hope so. HInes proved yesterday he isn't a linebacker, and Russell proved yesterday that he may be a liability in the passing game.

If Hines lines up in the box as the Star in a passing situation, I'm OK with that. If he lines up as LB, his butt had better be blitzing.

Bottom line, Hines, Rolle, Gibson, Williams and Coleman look to be the best playmakers on this defense.

For everyone saying that Hines will unseat a Senior that has two years of starts under his belt - it may take a bit more.

I know that Pryor did the same to Boeckman last season, but we all know Tress loves his seniors and gives them as many chances as he can.

I don't expect Hines to start at Safety vs USC this week. Im sure Anderson and the coach will have a meeting about needing the most out of his veteran abilities. The last thing the coach will do is unseat a Senior before a big game (ie. USC Boecks/Pryor). Should Anderson fail to fufill his duties on the field, expect to see Hines in at Free Safety against Toledo.

This isn't me taking sides because I do believe Hines will be a great player for us.

For everyone complaining about Russell's coverage skills and the fact that Hines should start over him, rewatch Navy's first score. It was Hines that overpursued and didn't play his assignment which let Hobbs walk into the endzone. I can't find the video of the second, so I can't speak to that, but it's not as if Hines played the perfect game either.

That may very well be true, but Navy's a much better running team than passing. A running TD is more palatable to me than a passing one (especially one for over 50 yards).

The difference IMO is that I see Hines as a high-potential, super-athletic, great safety who is, unfortunately, going to make serious mental errors. I see Russell as a guy who isn't going to blitz the crap out of you or anything, but he is a senior, been around here a while, and shouldn't make mistakes. When he starts blowing coverages...

Ouch!! But seniors do get overtaken. I've always like Anderson Russell. But then I've always liked Todd Denlinger, but Dex Larimore has earned the spot; and I always Todd Boeckman, . . .

Play on, Jermale!

Ohio State football: Hines in, Russell out as starting safety

OSU
Jermale Hines worked with the first-team defense at safety in practice today.

The change that many Ohio State observers thought was coming has been made, it appears.

Jermale Hines worked with the first-team defense at safety today, while former starting fee safety Anderson Russell worked with the second team. Previously, Russell was in his third year as a starter, with Hines a backup safety and the No. 1 nickelback at the "star" position.

But Russell was in coverage for both Navy passing touchdowns on Saturday, and Hines is a player that coaches have been saying needs to be on the field a lot.

To accommodate their skills, it looks like Kurt Coleman will move from strong safety to free safety and have slightly more coverage responsibilities, and Hines will take over at strong safety, where he can come up more often and help in the run game.

Don't be surprised if the Buckeyes also use three cornerbacks more often in passing situations on Saturday against USC.

Russell has played the "star" position before and is almost certain to remain on the field in nickel situations against spread teams, as Hines has been in the past. But after another game in which Russell had some issues in coverage, and Hines looked like a potential game-changer, this move comes as no surprise.

Congrats to Jer'Male! This move has just as much, if not more, to do with Hines' talent and work ethic than Russell's struggles against Navy. Jer'Male is a dynamic player, and it was only a matter of time until he had to be on the field as much as possible. A bit surprised to see Coleman move to FS, but considering his impressive INT last week, plus a couple similar plays last season, it seems we have everyone in a good spot. That's quite a trio of safeties we have for our nickel and dime packages, I look forward to seeing them all make big plays this week.
