S/LB Jer'Male Hines (official thread)

From what I've seen, Hines has made many more good plays than bad. Pretty impressive for a player seeing his first significant pt. I like the effect that his enthusiasm has on the rest of the D. He should have a lock on NB for next season, and perhaps FS as a senior.

Another game filled with impressive plays. He's looking like the next Mike Doss. Pretty amazing this is not only his first year starting but his first year playing safety.

Hines is a playmaker and really brings it! He's going to be a good one!

Thought I rememered seeing him go down on a play during the game and have to leave...they were looking at his knee??? Saw him in at the end so it couldn't have been much...

Yes, he did go out for a short time. I was at the game so I'm not sure what it was, but I'm relieved he was able to come back in. He's one of my favorite young players on this team.

Man Hines reminds me sooo much of Roy Williams. He may he a liability in coverage at times, but dang does he blow up plays on a regular basis. We haven't really had a fly around guy in a while like him. Kid has a motor and the more ways our Defensive coordinator can move him around and give him chances to make plays the better our defense is.

He was pursuing a play across the middle and a wide receiver came in and dove at his knees. I was pleasantly surprised to see him return after that. I expected it to be a more serious injury based on how it happened.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : OSU notebook: Pryor's passing earns more trust of coaches

Hines works a little

Because Illinois' offense likes to use multiple receivers and spread the field, the Buckeyes probably will use their nickel defense frequently.
With that in mind, linebackers coach Luke Fickell said nickel back Jermale Hines -- who had to be helped from the field because of an unspecified leg injury last week -- took part in some practice drills. His status for Saturday might be determined today.

I brought up Jer'Male's lack of trash talk in the L. Joyner thread. Jwins provided some great picks from when this young man took out the OU quarterback. Yes, it ended up being for the worse as the back-up came in and played the game of his life. But Jer'Male impressed me not just with the force of his hit, but he also didn't trash talk or act out in any way. He was all business and he was just doing his job.

It's players like this and Beanie that I will ALWAYS admire and hold in high regard.

No. 10: Junior defensive back Jermale Hines

I may be a little out there with this pick, but I'm a big fan of the former Glenville High player. However, I know people who are big fans of Tyler Moeller, who has been a similar player in some way to Hines over the years, and Moeller isn't in my top 20.

While Moeller is more of a linebacker, Hines continues on as the Buckeyes' starter at the star position, what they call their fifth defensive back in nickel sitiuations.

At 6-foot-2 and about 210 pounds, I think Hines may be the OSU defender who best fits the spread era of college football. Players who run like safeties and hit like linebacker are maybe the most valuable players on any defense these days, and I think that describes exactly the kind of player that Hines is.

If Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell weren't three-year senior starters ahead of him at safety, who knows what Hines may have done by now. But as a freshman, he lost the first half of the season to an eligibility snafu, and the coaches were so impressed with him, they still didn't redshirt him even though he played just the final seven games.

Last year, he was still learning his role but started the first two games when Coleman was dealing with an injury. Now he's a junior who knows the game, has all the skills and has to be near the top of any list of Buckeyes ready for breakout years.

He might be at his best when he's blitzing from the star position and chasing down quarterbacks, but he can do almost everything else as well. When the Buckeyes really need to cover in the nickel and want three true cornerbacks in the game, Hines may not be on the field.

Though he only technically started six games last season, Hines ranked ninth on the defense in minutes played. So he plays like a starter.

And this year, he might play like a star.
