S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

I don't think this is another one of NFBuck's ass statements. Dick Rod, when the Big10 suspended his LB after an obviously intentional and malicious punch, complained publicly (and you can imagine how vociferously he would've complained in private as well) saying that he's going to hold the Big10 responsible for the same standards. Big10 got scared, and started calling out regular game personal fouls. Dick Rod is a dickhead. And the Big10 is foolish in this situation for succumbing to his threat.
Oh, I know.

I really do think this involves Dick Rod's complaint.

Big Ten was spineless to let him run the show with his whining. Maybe it wasn't the whole reason, but it does seem the Big Ten has been acting differently since then.

football's a tough sport...

Which is why testosterone junkies crave it.

But players are getting bigger, faster, and stronger. 20 years ago a guy weighing 300 pounds lumbered. Now they fly. And helmets that are built to protect the head from blows also allow you to deliver a blow you could not deliver in a leather helmet.

It's a simple physics equation - you gotta find ways to protect the kids.

Just watched the replay. Williams was down and defenseless. IMO he deserves the suspension.

Yeah, he does. I like Coleman, but he could have seriously injured that guy and there was no call for it. He was down, the play was over, and Kurt went head-hunting. The suspension is warranted. Football's dangerous enough when the hits are clean.

I don't have a problem with the suspension.

If somebody for the Illini had hit Pryor like that, how many of us would have been screaming for a suspension?

I have a big problem with this...a 15 yard penalty is already a big no-no in a players mind. I was always on my best behavior to avoid a personal foul call because quite frankly, your punishment already awaited with the coaching staff if you got flagged. Everyone agrees that it was a late hit...so call it a 15 yarder and move on. It's not as if Coleman has a reputation of taking cheap shots and it's not as if he has been reviewed for this before. The more and more football associations start running this pillow-puff nazi agenda, the less we are going to see football played at full speed.

Late hits still need to be called but a suspension is just going too far. As JT mentioned, it wasn't as if Coleman intentionally tried to injure McGee. I can understand if he threw a punch after the play...that shows pre-mediation. For example, Rob Reynolds choking Jim Sorgi warranted at least a one game suspension...this does not. Plays happen so fast that the difference between good judgement on a hit and bad judgement is basically a second or two. Here is to hoping Johnson gets a chance to shine Saturday.

I'm good on Coleman sitting down. He shouldn't have been in there in the first place, but he doesn't need to be doing what he did. He knows better, and he'll tell you that.

The fact that he laughed about it is overblown, I don't think he laughed at the penalty. I think he was caught up in the moment, and laughed because he knew he messed up. But him being on the field right then was the original crime.

True, but if the league is taking it into their own hands, then they should take a look at the late hit out of bounds and subsequent punch that an Illini player through towards our bench.

I don't agree with the suspension either but where is this so-called punch? I've yet to see it. I've watched a replay over and over and can't see a punch thrown. Someone care to tell me where it is?

Go ahead and skip to 3:30 in the video.

I still can't see WHO threw a punch and WHEN or WHO it was intended for?

i agree with the suspension too, he led with his helmet after the play was over and nailed the guy right under the chin. that's an extremely dangerous play and thank God the QB didn't get seriously hurt.

i also agree with you about the laughing thing, if you look at his reaction on the sidelines after the fact, i think he's either realized or been shown just how dumb of a hit that was. coleman is a senior and a captain, and should be better than this. a one game suspension is harsh, but not excessive.

This does set a precedent.

As long as there is consistency then I'm fine with the suspension. This just means that ANY hit that is both late AND helmet to helmet will warrant a suspension from the next contest.

Damn liberal.

"Boy that poor quarterback was so vulnerable and the play was practicially over. Coleman should have went over to the Illi side and apologized and give the guy a hug for such a hard nosed hit which can not be tolerated in todays game. Futhermore, hitting a player under the chin is right up there with slugging somebody in the mouth"

This is how some of you guys who haven't played the game or any competitive game sound!

I'm with Tressel and Smith on this, the suspension is 'unjustified'. Taking away a game from a senior the NCAA should be ashamed of themselves. If it was so bad he should have been ejected.

With suspensions like this, don't complain later on when players give up or let up on plays because they are afraid of getting a suspension. Nice work NC Double A-Holes. Why do I suspect if Penn State or Michigan was Ohio States next game more people would be against this suspension?
