S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

37 seconds left in game...why was Kurt even in there at that point? This sucks. I sure hope Johnson steps up big time. Indiana has scored some points this year.
Against turds. The DL will feast on Chappell all day.

I, for one, blame Deputy DickRod.

Big Ten oughta think about suspending most of its officials and leave the late hits alone. Especially officials who can't see simultaneous receptions and those who make up rules like "Hitting the pylon, even when you haven't established yourself in bounds, is a touchdown."

There's little question Coleman's hit was late. As a consequence he drew a 15 yard penalty and his coaches pulled him from the game. He didn't punch a guy. He didn't choke anyone. He made a football play, even if too late. I get the player safety angle, but... well.. football's a tough sport...

Ridiculous.

Last time I checked, a "late hit" equaled a 15 yard penalty, right? End of story.

A "late hit" doesn't require the players coach to remove him from the game.

In seasons of late, we're starting to hear the term "helmet to helmet" quite a bit. I've been watching football for a long time, and "helmet to helmet" contact has pretty much been part of the game forever, it's probably why they wear them, cuzz the "head to head" contact in the day of the leather helmet certainly hurt like hell.

Excellent post here by BKB. It "IS" a tough sport, played by tough guys.

And yea, I'd agree that the officiating should be a bigger Big-10 Conference concern at this point, then a kid who is simply playing an agressive game agressively.

Peace.

Coleman getting 1 game is bullshit! The fact that he came off the field laughing is totally blown out of proportion. There were many of times I layed a good hit on somebody in high school or stuck a kid in the ribs with a fastball in college and occasionally laughed about it. Did i warrant a suspension? Or maybe i was lucky cause the t.v didn't catch me laughing about it.

We are talking about a defensive player making a defensive hit. Its not that simple to stop and think about how you want to hit the guy when the play is going 100 mph. Big Ten fucked up good on this one! You can bet your sweet ass I will be watching every big ten game this week counting how many FLAGGED late hits I see or questionable helmet to helmet hits.

Where does the Big Ten go with this now? If there are going to suspend for this then you can expect to see 20 plus suspensions this year....

For those that missed the late hit, go to espn360, click on the Illinois vs. OSU game and scroll over to the 2 hours 59 minutes mark. The play in question occurs during the 2nd play from scrimmage on the last Illinois possession.

The problem with the BT's statement is KC didn't actually make helmet to helmet contact. He made arm and shoulder contact to the head contact. The way he lowered his head prior to launching himself on to the pile had all the appearances of targeting a defensless player and attempting to initiate helmet to helmet contact. It just didn't happen, and the game video, live and replay, shows he missed. I suppose this is why JT and Gene Smith issued a joint statement disagreeing with the BT decision. How do you know a player targeted a defenseless player for helmet to helmet contact if it doesn't occur? Spearing is illegal and that wasn't the call.

I don't blame Tressel one bit for sending out a statement. Punishment? Not my call to make and it should have been Tressel's call not the Big Ten. All this does is open up a can of worms now. How far will the Big Ten go with these suspensions now?

Secondly, shoulder to helmet is not a penalty!

The suspension is complete and utter bullshit...a total kneejerk over-reaction. How far does the Big Ten office go? Suspend every incidence of unneccessary roughness?

I love how Smith and Tressel publicly called out the Big Ten office...

Historically Ohio State makes the right decisions... I don't understand the notion that this infers... that Ohio State doesn't ever punish from within. maybe they should sit down with Ray, Big Mike, Rob Reynolds, Mo Clarett etc. We actually do whats right and our coach should be deserving of making that decision for himself. Crap he was right on top of what happened... it happened right by our bench and he got him out immediately. Way to go Big Ten.

And I blame Dick Rod too, what an ass.
I don't think this is another one of NFBuck's ass statements. Dick Rod, when the Big10 suspended his LB after an obviously intentional and malicious punch, complained publicly (and you can imagine how vociferously he would've complained in private as well) saying that he's going to hold the Big10 responsible for the same standards. Big10 got scared, and started calling out regular game personal fouls. Dick Rod is a dickhead. And the Big10 is foolish in this situation for succumbing to his threat.

Correct. Crybaby opened up Pandora's box, so now the Big Ten feels the need to overcompensate to show they weren't picking on Mr. Sensitive. If nothing else, old DickRod has some serious balls complaining about a suspension handed out to his player for a clearly malicious uppercut.

But, he is still an ass.
