S Erick Smith (Official Thread)

Has smith played well enough at CB, to where he may switch positions, or is he solid at S and can just play CB in a pinch? It's great being able to have that option.

At least from the army practices analysts were saying that he was performing well enough to play CB at the last level. But with the amount of CB talent we've brought in the past couple years, I wouldn't mind him staying at safety.

Many have had Lattimore as the best player in Ohio this year. Some have moved Hubbard into that spot because of his dominating play down the stretch. Some have had Booker as the wire to wire best player in Ohio for 2014. Erick Smith certainly threw his name into the hat with his play this year. Something a safety has to have is good instincts. The ability to read a play and quickly get yourself into position based on what you saw on film or what the defensive scheme calls for. That is something Christian Bryant improved on immensely over the course of his career. It's something CJ Barnett has improved on this year, albeit slightly. And it's something I think Erick has in spades. His ability to diagnose a play is top notch. And he has the athleticism and toughness to get to the point of attach and finish a play off quickly. I have been talking about what a sleeper I think Hooker could be. Now pair him up with Erick and I think you have the makings of a great safety tandem a few years down the road.

I think we can all be thankful that all players mentioned are going to Ohio State!

There's nothing like having a safety who has corner cover skills, but can also attack the LOS in run support. With the amount of CBs we've recruited in the last couple classes we should be able to enjoy the luxury of skills Erick apparently brings. We've had a few corners converted to safeties over the years (Barnett, C. Coleman), but I can't remember the last safety turned corner...

Erick is a good looking kid with a great big smile and great attitude. He is very active and athletic. He tackles hard and covers well. He has a nose for the ball, and quick to react. He is thin at this point, though. If he is going to be a great player at OSU, he has to hit the weight room and eat like a horse. You simply can not tackle very hard on a consistent basis if you are not thick. How many times have we seen shazier or others admirably tackle hard, only to stay on the turf and the other guy pops up. If your body is not ready, and after few hits, your mind will pull you back and your game will become soft, even if your nature and your desire tell you otherwise. Build those muscles up!

Actually, both of the Northmont boys were recruited as safeties. As for safeties converted corner...good point, not sure we've had that. I think the reason would be that usually if you are recruited at safety, you're big enough that you are more likely to convert to LB than CB. However, Smith is a rare example it seems. I think he would be a great CB but with the guys we have that are likely strictly corners the past two years (Webb, Lattimore, Apple, Conley, and Burrows), I think he plays safety. But his coverage/tackling skills could also be an asset early on at Star.
