S Caleb Downs (All B1G, All-American)

Ok, so not Vonn Bell, more like Jordan Battle. As already said, we're fine at DB even though Downs would've been a big get. Probably can close out DB recruiting at this point if everyone stays on board.

As I look at Lindy's line-up of best CB's and S's, see too many names at the top of the list that at one time were tOSU 'leans', or 'have to have'. Some were commits - Battle, Singletery, and some Ringo, Ricks were thought to be slam dunks. don't even count AJ Harris, as he was a slammer until Coombs couldn't take a demotion and went to Cincy. OK, we've had DBs on that list that have panned out, but don't believe every year a Burke shows out as a top flight DB.....There seems to be something in the water in the Woody. Tackett had 'something happen' that soured him on the Buckeyes, Downs was a lean until Satan got his hooks into him (I guess), and/or Georgia swoops in and wins their hearts and commitment. Yeah, I get that 18 year olds change their minds easily. Even the DL guys are hesitant to sign up with the good guys. Maybe sour grapes on my part, but anyone out there able to opine? Go Bucks!

In general, the rumor is that the big recruiting weekend on June 26 was a mess because there were too many players and none of them received highly individualized attention. It also seems probable that because there were so many kids there that committed to other schools, the vibe around the Ohio State brotherhood was off and not as compelling as it might have been.

If true , who was in charge ? Why was that weekend treated differently?

It seems likely the people in charge were expecting/hoping to highlight the brotherhood at Ohio State through the peer recruiting of currently committed players and the momentum of having so many players there at once. This was the focus over individual attention to each.

That didn’t work out for whatever reason—and there could be many. You just hope that a lesson was learned and they come up with a more effective strategy in the future.

For as much hand wringing as the fanbase likes to do over recruiting, 1) it is a completely new recruiting world with NIL and transfer rules, and 2) Day has consistently brought in higher ranked classes than Meyer did year over year.

I think Day has things going in the right direction and will continue to refine the approach in the brand new world of NIL and transfers.

So, you're saying there were too many superstars in the building and they weren't shown enough individual love? OSU and Buckeye Nation will survive w/o those type of individuals around.

Happy that the kids are finally getting compensated, but the current state of NIL and how it is being handled is ruining the sport that I love.

Always thought Mark Pantoni was in charge of these get togethers, and that he made the 'host' assignments. Can't really blame the coaches (much) for not knowing the faces and names of the myriad of recruits, but based on what's been printed before, not the usual thing. Pantoni is a genius at what he does, and we readers always read how well these things go. Seems uncharacteristic of his work product. Of course, Buckeye Nation doesn't hear how many recruits etc, so don't know the stretch of the gatherings. Still, if you're not a 3* from Podunksville, the position coach should have had a picture plastered in front of his computer for awhile.....

If happens, would be a fantastic two-fer. First off, kid is a pure safety, and believe just Knowles is looking for. Second off, anytime tOSU can pick Nick Satan's pocket, we should, with glee. As I mentioned above somewhere, too many of our recruits (Battle, TE this year) have either flipped their commitment or un-leaned to the good guys to go south. Hope Buckeye Huddle isn't putting out 'fake news' designed to garner hits rather than dispense good information. Bama doesn't lose many once they have tasted the kool-aid......

Idk if I'd put too much worry in the guys Bama flipped or beat for a recruit. The 2 examples you used are guys who were from the south already, so getting them to OSU was already going to be an uphill battle. I could see it as being no different than if Bama felt they led for a kid from the midwest or had him committed, and OSU was able to flip him, or earn his signature in the end. Ian Moore is a prime example of a national recruit from the midwest, who I'm sure Bama is going hard after, but I can see OSU winning over in the end, same with the 2 talented CBs in OH in '24.

To bring this back around to Caleb, we have to get him on campus, and Saban has shown that he wants none of his committed players to visit OSU. Sure they can visit Tennessee, LSU, scUM, USC, etc, but he has explicitly stated that he doesn't want his committed guys visiting OSU

Eliano will be going to Downs' HS on Friday to see him play. Day may join him
