S Caleb Downs (All B1G, All-American)

Anyone else on Gleitman's mailing list? I'm still expecting Bama to be the pick, but cleaning up my email from the last week and came across this that I missed from 4 days ago:

"CALEB DOWNS
Despite what may be reported elsewhere, a final decision has NOT been made. I am told that the decision is expected to be finalized soon and made public by the end of the month---maybe I think you're looking at around 1 week from now to know where Caleb Downs will be playing his college football.

Now, in talking with some people I know that cover and are tied in with Alabama, they have a good amount of confidence they are the pick. That said, I have someone that knows the family pretty well that thinks OSU checks all of the boxes and that the relationship with Tim Walton is a big difference maker.

In talking with some sources inside the WHAC, there is more optimism this week than when I spoke to them last week. They have not been informed of a decision either way and admitted that Alabama could certainly be the pick, but I was personally a bit taken aback to hear someone tell me they would "honestly be surprised if Caleb picks Alabama". Take that FWIW.

This one does still feel a bit Vonn Bell-ish to me, but I am not ready to make a pick just yet. Common sense says maybe go with Bama, but the source that knows Downs and some renewed optimism from the OSU side have me waiting and seeing before I make any call on this one."

Thanks for posting this, good stuff. You just fight until the end on these types of recruits and see where the chips fall. Funny he used the phrase "Vonn Bell-ish" because I had the exact same feeling. Elite safety from GA, lean and athletic ballhawk...everyone thought he would land at Bama or some other SEC school. I remember when he picked the good guys and just being elated, and boy did Bell turn out to be a great one (and not only for my Buckeyes, but eventually for my Bengals).

I digress. Hoping Downs is the next in line of a Bell-type safety, but having guarded optimism as it sounds like many are. Good news is our DB class is stacked right now, so getting Downs is not necessary but could be a critical player if he lands here much like Bell when he came in with Apple, Conley and Burrows.
