Andrew Bone Director of Recruiting Alabama On3
Rumors have swirled on message boards the last few weeks regarding Downs and his commitment status with the Crimson Tide after taking an unofficial visit to Georgia two weekends ago. Most on the UGA side have pretty much indicated the chance of him flipping to the Bulldogs is very low.
I have mentioned the last few months that Ohio State is a bigger threat than Georgia. The Buckeyes have continued to push very hard behind the scenes. Downs, for the most part, has been focused on his senior season. Mill Creek will play Westlake on Friday night in the state playoffs.
Taking visits to Georgia and Ohio State this fall were always part of his plan. We mentioned that before the start of the season and throughout. Some like to lose their minds whenever rumors of a visit happen even though it's been expected.
Downs is currently not expected to visit Alabama this weekend from what I've learned today. Is he visiting Ohio State for its game against Michigan? We do not know. Downs has not confirmed those plans. We do know that he wanted to attend 'big game environments' see what the atmosphere is like at certain schools. He attended Alabama's game against Texas A&M. He was in Athens for the Tennessee game (also attended the season opener against Oregon in Atlanta).
I don't know yet what Downs will do this weekend as it pertains to visiting Ohio State. It's not that difficult to hop on a plane in Atlanta to get to a Columbus for a noon kick-off if he has decided to do that. We will update as soon as it is confirmed.
Is there major concern with Downs potentially flipping? I don't think that's the case based on the interview Downs did with On3 Sports reporter Jeremy Johnson last week. Is he someone we are monitoring closely? For sure especially since he has remained in contact with the Dawgs and Buckeyes. I believe the ultimate key for Downs will come down to final conversations during in-home visits in December.
You can imagine other schools are telling him how Bama is fading, assistants will get fired, etc.. I believe he will want to talk to Coach Saban about everything and as long as he continues to feel comfortable will stick with his decision
