Ohio State football vs. Rutgers: Game Time Decisions for Buckeyes' night game against Scarlet Knights
Can the secondary make a statement?
Shaun Wade found out what it means to be a No. 1 cornerback in the 38-25 win over Penn State. Jahan Dotson made some amazing catches on the veteran, and all of a sudden, people started questioning whether he was good enough to play outside. But Wade will be fine, assured defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs. Sometimes good players made good plays, and there’s nothing you can do about that.
“I talked to Shaun and Sevyn (Banks) both about how I just got done spending two years in the league where they caught balls on us,” Coombs said on Tuesday. “That happens. They have good players, and good players make good plays.”
Rutgers doesn’t have a player capable of doing what Dotson did. In six games, the Buckeyes have held the Scarlet Knights under 100 passing yards three times and doing so again on Saturday would be an impressive feat.
That means no big plays, which is what this defense prided itself on in 2019.
Will Brendon White be the best safety?
If White had decided not to transfer after the 2019 season, there’s a good chance that he could be the starting safety over Marcus Hooker. Or at least playing the role Josh Proctor has this season, which is the same position the coaching staff spent all of the spring claiming was tailor-made for White’s talents.
Instead, he’s a Scarlet Knight, and the other two have defined roles for the Buckeyes. The question is whether White will outplay Hooker and Proctor and leave fans thinking about what could have been? Or will Hooker and Proctor continue with their progression that led to a solid Week 2 after an OK Week 1?
Is this a chance for Trey Sermon to shine?
Both running backs graded as champions against Penn State, but Master Teague was clearly the better player. Teague isn’t the most elusive running back, but his size and power made him more suited to get carries in the second half, and he turned it into 110 yards and a score on 23 carries. That’s an improvement from what he did against Nebraska.
Sermon still hasn’t had a breakout moment, and a game against a lackluster opponent could offer one. The passing game featuring Justin Fields, Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson is already a proven approach. But the running game needs to be at the very least complementary to that. Ohio State wants a two-back system, which means it needs Sermon to play better. Getting him extra opportunities might be the extra confidence boost needed for him to show why they brought him to Columbus.

Just sayin': Brendon White could very well be the best safety on the field today. However, there are 21 other starting positions that Rutgers will come up short on.
