Rivalries and Conferences (Split from LSU v. OSU Offensive Personnel Thread)

i guarantee you that if you asked ANYONE football fan or no in the state of ohio what a successful season would be for the buckeyes you would get one answer. "beat michigan". period. thats the season. there is no bigger game and there never will be. not our upcoming game with you. not our game last year against florida. not our game against miami in 02/03. not usc next year. "the game" goes so far beyond history or tradition or winning % or who goes to what bowl game. 1 saturday every year matters. the rest are icing on the cake.

So, Ohio State's only had 41 successful seasons in its long and illustrious history. If the national championship is not as big as the Michigan game then why are you here arguing with LSU fans? Shouldn't you be talking trash to Michigan or something?

If y'all were to have to UM but still made the NC game and won. UM fans would be able to talk trash about winning but you guys could just tell them to kiss your crystal asses. I think that would be better than beating them but only to finish 6-6 or osmehintg. maybe thats just me. oh well

No, the question is here why are LSU fans hear arguing with us about something they know nothing about (a rivalry) because they don't have one.

Ok you have us, LSU considers all the SEC teams rival but they are really not rivals. I understand why OSU needs "The Game". When you only play 1 or 2 good teams a year you need to blow the importance of that one up to make up for the deficit experienced in the previous 8 or 9 weeks.... I KID.. I KID.... :tongue2:

Maybe you could show me where I'm missing LSU's rival on this website:

Florida State-Miami
Georgia-Georgia Tech
Indiana-Purdue
Michigan-Ohio State
Minnesota-Wisconsin
Mississippi-Mississippi State
Nebraska-Oklahoma
Oregon-Oregon State
Pittsburgh-West Virginia
Southern Cal-UCLA
Tennessee-Vanderbilt

Washington-Washington State

Am I missing something? (I kid, I kid)

I imagine that it's difficult for SOME LSU fans to understand the OSU-scUM rivalry considering:

1) There is no rival for LSU.
2) LSU is a relative "Johnny Come Lately" who has really own shown the propensity for success since 2000. Granted, the winning percentage is 61.95% is not bad and they've won 14 championships in the program's history. Interestingly enough, 4 of those have come since 2001:

Louisiana State Championships

No one can take anything away from Auburn - 'Bama. That will be a rivalry for years to come. Certain rivalries aren't affected by record. That is one of them. Pitt - WVU is one of them. USC - UCLA is one of them. Texas - Texas A&M is definitely one of them. Ohio State - Michigan is, obviously, one of them.

I could give a shit about the number of leather helmet victories when Brown was a football power. Line up anybody and beat us (or whoever) in the here and now!

God! Just insinuating that other thing will bring in Bama fans....:(

I didn't truly realize what a "rivalry" could be until I got involved here at Buckeye Planet. Like I wrote earlier in this thread, this website is practically an "I hate Michigan" website. It's insane. Is there any one here that is involved on a Michigan football discussion forum? Are Michigan fans there just as obsessed about Ohio State as Ohio State fans here are with Michigan?

My favorite Michigan rivalry has always been the Michigan vs. Notre Dame rivalry, especially back in the late 80's and early 90's. The main reason I love that game so much is because you have the program with the #1 winning percentage in history playing the team with the #2 winning percentage in history. In addition, Michigan and Notre Dame's fight songs are my two favorite fight songs in all of college football. Also, Michigan and ND have the only two stadiums in the Midwest that I consider to be among the absolute greatest in the nation. For these reasons, the Michigan v. ND game is always one of my favorite games to watch during college football season.

As for the Michigan vs. Ohio State game, I've never watched it in my life except for last year when it was #1 vs. #2, and even then, I only watched parts of the game because I was more interested in the other game I was watching at the time (which was, no doubt, a big game that had implications for LSU).

However, like I said, I didn't realize what a "rivalry" could be until I got involved here at BP. You Buckeye people are seriously obsessed with Michigan. I had no idea. One of the great things I will take with me from my time here is an appreciation for the Michigan vs. Ohio State game. Now that I know how obsessed Ohio State fans are with Michigan, that makes the Michigan vs. Ohio State game seem very, very interesting to watch in the future.

But does Michigan have the same obsession with Ohio State that Ohio State has for Michigan? I mean, I've always looked at Michigan as by far the greatest program in the Big Ten (if not the entire U.S.). To me, Ohio State and Penn State are both a small step below them. I don't mean any disrespect: I am very, very, very, very excited to be playing #1 Ohio State, and I would be just as excited to play #1 Penn State. But to play #1 Michigan or #1 Notre Dame, wow!!! That would be my ideal dream situation. So I'm wondering is if the Ohio State obsession with Michigan is because Michigan is the best program in the Big Ten (if not the entire U.S.), and Ohio State hates them for it? Is that what's going on? Or are Michigan fans just as obsessed with Ohio State as Ohio State is with Michigan?

The reason I ask is because this Ohio State obsession with Michigan is pretty insane. I've never seen anything like it from any other fans. Look at it like this, a lot of sportswriters claim that after the Michigan v. Ohio State rivalry, the next two greatest in college football are the Texas v. Oklahoma rivalry and the Alabama v. Auburn rivalry.

And sure, Texas vs. Oklahoma is a huge game to Texas fans, but so is Texas vs. Texas A&M. The vast majority of Texas fans are not completely obsessed with only the Oklahoma game, like Ohio State is with Michigan. As for Oklahoma fans, I don't know too much about them, that would be interesting if they were just as obsessed with Texas as Ohio State is with Michigan.

And sure, Alabama v. Auburn is a huge game to their fans, but so are other games on their schedules. The vast majority of Alabama fans are not completely obsessed with only the Auburn game, like Ohio State is with Michigan. And the vast majority of Auburn fans are not completely obsessed with only the Alabama game, like Ohio State is with Michigan.

My point is that I never realized there was a team in college football who had a fan base where the vast majority of fans were completely obsessed with just one single other team. Is Michigan like that as well? Are there any other programs that have fans like that? It really is quite a fascinating concept.

You have no idea how big of a mistake you have made with this statement.

Also Michigan does view us the same way. Check the HBO special that ran this year if its is still available. In fact any fan of another team should be forced to watch it before they can even comment on "The Game".
