Well, part of it was i went to La Tech, and really do not know very much about ULL besides what i have heard. I appreciate you calling my Engineering degree garbage though. I'll have to go in and let my boss know he needs to find a replacement for me first thing in the morning. lol
Cheer up... you might still be able to upset M*ch*g*n with that analogy. :p

No engineering degree is garbage. A bachelor's in engineering is one of the most prestigious undergraduate degrees one can earn, no matter what school he or she went to. Sure, even though La. Tech isn't that great of a school, you have to realize that not many schools are authorized to grant a variety of engineering degrees. One great thing about La. Tech is that it is one of the "not many schools" that is authorized to grant a variety of engineering degrees.

What other schools in Louisiana are authorized to grant a variety of engineering degrees? Off the top of my head, I believe that Tulane, LSU, ULL, UNO, McNeese, Southern, and La. Tech are the only seven colleges in Louisiana that are allowed to offer engineering degrees. I don't think they have departments of engineering at LSU-Eunice, LSU-Shreveport, LSU-Alexandria, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Northwestern State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Grambling State University, Nicholls State University, Loyola University, Centenary College, etc. But, I'm just guessing, like I said, off the top of my head. I'd have to research it before I try to make it sound like a fact.

Heck, to be honest, my high school english teacher got mad at me for applying only to Tech. She pretty much said that I could go anywhere in the country, why the heck Tech? I even got a letter from a pretty good school in England but i really doubt i could have gotten into it if i wanted, plus tuition there would have been bout 10 grand a semester. lol Part of english teachers point was that Tech gave out least money of anywhere in state and i should have at least applied to other schools. I was like, that is 20 bucks a school to apply for scholly's...heck no, i don't have that. yeah, stupid when i look back now, but just didn't care bout it back then. Actually looked into school in England though, that one intrigued me but it was really only one i gathered much info on. But heck, it was England.

Anyway, looked up a few stats and ULL and Tech; you got me curious. Both were ranked in the national category by US News in the fourth tier and had selective admissions, so pretty similar. ULL had about 67% more people, so i guess i would expect them to get a bigger endowment, too, but they did get bout 100 percent bigger. Tech was more expensive though. Tuition there was 4300 compared to 3300 for ULL. Guess point of my above story was to say that Tech just didn't charge more to give it back.I realize TOPS pays for it now(Honors when i graduated, switched to tops like year after). I still got free ride though so English teacher worried over nothing.

Can you blame your teacher for getting mad at you for only applying to Tech? My gosh, that really was retarded on your part at that time in your life. Why didn't you at least go to LSU? I could never imagine settling for any public college in Louisiana less than LSU.

In fact, I also feel kind of "stupid when i look back now" by choosing to go to LSU. I had full scholarships to many better schools across the country. But LSU's party scene blew me away, and I wanted to experience that. I told myself that I only got one chance to live it up, to make those stories I can tell my grandkids about. And I definitely lived it up at LSU. I don't regret it at all.

If i had to do it over again, I would. I really have no way of knowing if i would have gotten free rides to better schools across the country as you did, but i think there is a pretty good chance i could have. Had decent test scores and all. Not really sure what i would do, knowing what i know now, but it'd definately be something different. lol Plus, those 20 bucks for application fees would have added up for me at that time. My dad was hurt and couldn't work then.

Well, think about this:

You've got a legit undergrad degree in engineering. That's awesome. Think about going to LSU and getting your MBA or JD.

The MBA is a huge plus when you have an engineering undergrad. With an undergrad in engineering with an MBA, you will be in high demand and you with be making $100K in no time.

And as for the JD, with your engineering undergrad degree, you (along with those with undergrad degrees in pure science) are the only people eligible to take the Patent Bar and become federal patent attorneys. That's a high demand field that makes major bucks (mininum $100K).

But the best part, is that you will actually get to experience LSU as an LSU student. As much as I love college football, and as much as I love LSU, it will never be the same to me as those days back when I was an actual LSU student.

And as for your Dad, I hope he's doing better nowadays.

Good point. The fact of the matter is that I do still wish I had gone to a school like UC-Berkeley and gotten one of the most prestigious undergrad educations in history. But I gave that up for a different kind of experience that I am just as proud of. Now, if you could combine a UC-Berkeley education with an LSU student experience... that would be college heaven.

Yes, ULL is the flagship school of the Univ. of Louisiana system. La. Tech is garbage compared to ULL. I assume that you imagine La. Tech is a better school just because the name "La. Tech" sounds more prestigious that ULL. But ULL has a $94 million dollar endowment, while La. Tech only has a $47 million dollar endowment.

And no, LSU is not Louisiana's flagship school of any kind. Louisiana's "flagship school of any kind" is Tulane (a private school), who has an endowment of $1 billion. LSU is the flagship public college of Louisiana, with an endowment of $600 million. But yes, ULL ($94 million endowment) is garbage compared to LSU ($600 million endowment). But ULL is still the flagship university of the University of Louisiana system. But sure, the University of Louisiana system is garbage compared to the Louisiana State University system. Put it this way, the Louisiana State University system is like Div 1 football, and LSU is #1. The Univ. of Louisiana system is like Div 2 football, and ULL is #1 there.

:crazy::crazy::crazy:

LSU is the top research institution in Louisiana. It is the FLAG ship school of Louisiana. The next level are the SLUs and ULLs which are not as research intensive and more based on practical education. Of the two I think SLU is larger.

Tulane is a shell of its former self when it comes to research and student body. They cut the majority of their programs after Katrina.

ULL is a flagship school in its own mind.

Like Ohio State, Tulane is annually ranked as one of the best national universities by US News. In their 2008 rankings, US News ranks Tulane #50 and Ohio State #59. LSU is nowhere even close. The only SEC schools that that are ranked in the top 50 are Vanderbilt (#19) and the University of Florida (#49). LSU is ranked in the 3rd tier.

Also like Ohio State, Tulane is one of only 62 elite research schools that were invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities (which includes Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, UC-Berkeley, Stanford, etc.). The Association of American Universities is only open to those schools that are the top research schools in North America, and no, LSU is not a member. The only SEC schools that are members are Vanderbilt and the Univ. of Florida.

When it comes to academics and research, Tulane is on the level of Ohio State, Vanderbilt, and Florida. LSU is not even close.

If you want to downplay Tulane, don't fabricate falsehoods about Katrina's effect on Tulane (which was minimal). A better way would be to point out that approximately 85% of students that go to Tulane are not from Louisiana, so it's not fair to compare it to our state universities which try to take Louisiana students over out-of-state students.
