Rivalries and Conferences (Split from LSU v. OSU Offensive Personnel Thread)

sluTiger, you've got your facts all wrong.

The two biggest public university systems in our state are the Louisiana State University System and the University of Louisiana System (formerly "the Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities" -- in Louisiana).

The Louisiana State University System's flagship school is LSU, and its other schools include LSU-Eunice, LSU-Shreveport, LSU-Alexandria, and the University of New Orleans (formerly LSU-New Orleans).

The University of Louisiana System's flagship school is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly the University of Southwestern Louisiana), and its other schools include the University of Louisiana at Monroe (formerly Northeast Louisiana University), Northwestern State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Louisiana Tech University, Grambling State University, McNeese State University, and Nicholls State University.

What really happened was that then-University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) received permission in 1984 from their university system to change their school's name to the "The University of Louisiana" (not as you claimed, LSU-Lafeyette). Louisiana's state agency in charge of all public schools in Louisiana immediately filed suit to stop the name change, and the suit was successful.

Then, in 1995, the university system that USL belonged to ("the Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities" -- in Louisiana) successfully convinced our state legislature to change their name to the University of Louisiana System. When this happened, the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), as the flagship school of the University of Louisiana System, wanted to again change their name to the "The University of Louisiana." However, their aspirations were shot down, and they were only allowed to call themselves the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

In my opinion, this is the way it should be:

The schools in the LSU university system should be called LSU, LSU-Eunice, LSU-Shreveport, LSU-Alexandria, and LSU-New Orleans (not the University of New Orleans).

The schools in the Univ. of Louisiana system should be called the Univ. of Louisiana (not UL-Lafayette), UL-Monroe, UL-Natchitoches (not Northwestern State University), UL-Hammond (not Southeastern Louisiana University), UL-Ruston (not Louisiana Tech University), UL-Grambling (not Grambling State University), UL-Lake Charles (not McNeese State University), and UL-Thibodaux (not Nicholls State University).

That would just make more logical sense.

Anyway, Merry Christmas!!!

:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: !!!COONASS ALERT!!! :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Oh my god you must be from New Iberia or Lafayette!!!

Basically the history is that USL was jealous of not being LSU and wanted to be called LSU. It is probably more accurate to say Lafayette is jealous of not being Baton Rouge. They did want to be part of the LSU system and use the Louisiana State University name. All USL wanted was to be seen as important as LSU from a name recognition standpoint. They could not get that because LSU has to much stroke, so they came up with University of Louisiana crapola. Every school mentioned above rejected the idea except the UL Monroe.

LOL, I love South Louisiana...

If sluTiger wants to argue about the pressure of the OSU/UM game and compare any game in the nation to that one then he is simply ignorant as to the history of the game and to college football as whole.
This isn't just a Big Ten thing or a Midwest thing.....It has been named numerous times by a variety of sources as the greatest rivalry in ALL of sports. That includes Yankees/red Sox, Lakers/Celtics or any others.
To continue to argue against this simply shows a lack of understanding of the game and the history of college football.
I wouldn't waste any more of my time.

Look, sluTiger, everything I wrote above is true. I actually wasted about an hour researching all that to make sure it was true. Take what I wrote to your college professors at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), and they will tell you that it is true.

And, no, I am not from Cajun territory, although I do have a lot of pride for the contributions that Cajuns made to the culture that makes our state so great. In addition, I believe that Cajun territory produces more beautiful and sweetheart Louisiana girls than any other region of our state (although there are certainly many beautiful and sweetheart girls from every part of Louisiana).

As for myself, my family is not originally from Louisiana. I was only born and raised down here because my father's company made him work down here. No offense, I love Louisiana and there are many, many things that make our state one of the best places on Earth, but our public educational system is one of the worst in the United States. Fortunately, my parents were able to send me to elite private schools so that I actually got an above-average education.

And the university I received my bachelor's degree from was LSU. Sure, LSU is the best public college in our state, but its not up there with the great public schools of states that are much larger than Louisiana, such as Ohio State and many others.

Anyway, the point is that everything I wrote is true. Like I said, take what I wrote to your college professors at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), and they will confirm it.

Again, Merry Christmas!!!

Put another way: Suppose LSU makes it to the SEC championship game but loses. Would LSU fans really be able to say, "Well, at least we beat Auburn," and that would make up for it?

I guarantee that, hypothetically, if there were a Big Ten championship game, and let's say for argument's sake that Michigan lost to Wisconsin in it. We could live with that if we had beaten OSU.

It has been exactly one day since I read on a Florida board a poster's comment that if we beat Georgia, he could live with 10 other losses every year.

I might not go that far, but if we could beat the poodles the next twenty in a row, I'd be willing to give up twenty years of winning records. Seriously.

What about the Florida vs. Florida State rivalry? Many, many people in Florida think that is the only rivalry that matters. What's great about football down here is that there are so many rivalries that we can't just settle on "one" to call "The Game." Granted, the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry is WAY bigger than anything down here in the South (I mean just look at this BP website, it is practically an "I hate Michigan" website), but that's just because the Big Ten has only had two traditional powerhouses, while the South has had many.

The talk about the importance of The Game and the NC made me curious, so I checked a few statistics comparing the week leading up to each last year. I took the six days leading up to the game, since travel/game attendance makes gamedays difficult to compare.

While we had about 21% more new posts leading up to the NC game than leading up to The Game, we had about 7% more visitors and 16% more new registrations the week leading up to The Game. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, and it can be interpreted in a number of ways, but I thought I'd throw it out there just as new fodder for discussion.

ULL is the flagship school? lol I've never really thought very much of it. Would have never imagined it as a better school than Tech. Just kind of surprised. Actually, just thought LSU was louisiana's only flagship school of any kind.

They presume too much by thinking we are their big rivals. Maybe to younger Gators ignorant of their heritage, but to older Gators, and especially those who came of age in the 70s and 80s, there is no question who the Dark Forces are - they lie in the mange infested land of the flea ridden butt sniffing leg humpers. And thus it shall be forever.

Also, statistics show there are way too many colleges in Louisiana bearing similar names.

Fact.

We probably have too many colleges period. We have ULM, La Tech, and Grambling on I-20 all basically within 30-35 miles of each other. Plus there are still more votechs in this 30 mile region

Yes, ULL is the flagship school of the Univ. of Louisiana system. La. Tech is garbage compared to ULL. I assume that you imagine La. Tech is a better school just because the name "La. Tech" sounds more prestigious that ULL. But ULL has a $94 million dollar endowment, while La. Tech only has a $47 million dollar endowment.

And no, LSU is not Louisiana's flagship school of any kind. Louisiana's "flagship school of any kind" is Tulane (a private school), who has an endowment of $1 billion. LSU is the flagship public college of Louisiana, with an endowment of $600 million. But yes, ULL ($94 million endowment) is garbage compared to LSU ($600 million endowment). But ULL is still the flagship university of the University of Louisiana system. But sure, the University of Louisiana system is garbage compared to the Louisiana State University system. Put it this way, the Louisiana State University system is like Div 1 football, and LSU is #1. The Univ. of Louisiana system is like Div 2 football, and ULL is #1 there.

Well, part of it was i went to La Tech, and really do not know very much about ULL besides what i have heard. I appreciate you calling my Engineering degree garbage though. I'll have to go in and let my boss know he needs to find a replacement for me first thing in the morning. lol
