Rivalries and Conferences (Split from LSU v. OSU Offensive Personnel Thread)

I think that most here would agree that the little assholes Heisman moment was the punt return and pose in the endzone against Ohio State.

You're right. As much as OSU fans can't stand it, whenever there is discussion on TV regarding Howard's winning the Heisman and a clip is shown, it is inevitably (and painfully) him striking the pose against OSU, not his diving catch against ND.

JohnLSU,

Please don't post photos like those again. They make me want to puke. I think that most here would agree that the little assholes Heisman moment was the punt return and pose in the endzone against Ohio State.

Wow, that pic of the Michigan player doing the Heisman pose was after a punt return in the Ohio State game? I never knew that. Looking it up, ESPN ranks that as the #32 of the 100 greatest plays, performances, or moments that define college football (see here). That's awesome. What other great moments have the Ohio State vs. Michigan game had?

That would be another traitor, Charles Woodson.

Tons, but one that stands out for me, recently anyway, was "The Catch" by Anthony Gonzalez in 2005 that set up the game winning score with 37 seconds left in 2005. So much so, that I have a framed copy of the picture taken by BP's own hawaiianbuckeye (below) hanging in my living room.

there is no doubt that scUM vs ND is a great rivalry. To be honest though it seems like everybody has a rivalry of sorts with ND (see USC and every service academy). Everybody hates ND so everybody wants to beat them. Plus for me for it to be a true rivalry you should play in the same conference so you play each other every year. I know they do play ND every year but that was recently almost not the case.

Plus I just don't see the same hatred of ND from scUM fans as I do towards OSU. I think alot of that comes from the history of the rivalry and the ruined seasons at the others hands.

All you heard about Carr lately was how he could not beat OSU. I doubt that if he had the same streak against ND (assuming they were as good as OSU is now) that anybody would really want his head on a chopping block for not being able to beat ND.

STFU. You're trying really hard to turn this into a smack board, so here ya go: Death Valley is in Clemson, SC.
Probably fall on deaf ears ... :wink2:

The original nickname of "deaf valley" was applied to the stadium (distinguishing it from Clemson University's Memorial Stadium), but over the years was misunderstood for "death valley".

See, it's just a simple misunderstanding.

If the national championship is not as big as the Michigan game then why are you here arguing with LSU fans?

because im too lazy to create a user id on an lsu board to argue with lsu fans? theres only so many times you can type LLLLLLoyd before it begins to loose a little of its luster. not a lot mind you, but a little. besides, they hired rr. scum fans have enough problems atm.

If y'all were to have to UM but still made the NC game and won. UM fans would be able to talk trash about winning but you guys could just tell them to kiss your crystal asses. I think that would be better than beating them but only to finish 6-6 or osmehintg. maybe thats just me. oh well

A. thats damn near impossible as it is our last game and B. thats how we know you don't have a rival. in fact, thats the basis of a rival game. its more than post season awards or trophies or records. its bragging rights for a year. if we loose to scum and back door our way into the nc... it doesn't have much meaning now does it? would they say we back doored our way in? of course they would. the fact is, they would be right. you loose to scum and the season is a disappointment. its just that simple.

in fact, 04 is a perfect example of this. we lost in overtime to nw of all teams. got slapped around by wisky, then ass raped by iowa and topped it off with a loss to friggin purdue. BUT! we beat scum in what began the "troy era" soundly slamming the door shut on any hopes of a nc appearance and forcing them to back door their way into the big 10 championship. aaaaaaaaaaa memories, they please me. i am pleased.

if you doubt anything you have read here, just read these quotes from the players. a couple of gems:

beanie wells:
"I was emotional today," Wells said. "This is playing Michigan. I don't know what it is, something about that maize and blue, it's kind of like a good vs. evil game."

mike hart:
I'd rather lose to Appalachain State than Ohio State"

he should know...

if these aren't enough for you. read... well... any woody quote. ever.

I didn't truly realize what a "rivalry" could be until I got involved here at Buckeye Planet. Like I wrote earlier in this thread, this website is practically an "I hate Michigan" website. It's insane. Is there any one here that is involved on a Michigan football discussion forum? Are Michigan fans there just as obsessed about Ohio State as Ohio State fans here are with Michigan?

ask LLLLLLoyd carr. he probably has an opinion on that. the simple answer is yes, they are just as obsessed as we are. the only difference is their obsession is expressed a little bit differently. scum, much like nd, fans tend to be rather arrogant and cling a tad too strongly to the leather helmet days.

just so you lsu fans understand. i don't think many of us here have an issue with you not caring about the game or seeing it as a must watch/must understand match up. but we do have serious issues with you or anyone else coming here and telling us it isn't relevant or important. to do so is almost akin to telling a die hard the south will rise again type to drop it and move on. the difference is that war ended. right now as i type this there is a clock counting down the seconds to our next meeting.

to summarize in song:

O, we don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan
The whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan
We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we're from Ohio
We're from Ohio...O-H
We're from Ohio...I-O
O, we don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan
The whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan
We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we're from Ohio

Songs of The Ohio State University - We Don't Give a Damn for the Whole State of Michigan

give it a listen, it always brings a smile to may face.

Yes, but I could say that every Ohio State fan should be forced to watch an HBO special on the Michigan vs. ND rivalry.

Maybe we would if HBO deemed the rivalry worthy of a documentary. HBO in its illustrious documentary history, has only once produced a film that focused on a collegiate sport. Of all possible subjects that could entail, they elected to focus on the OSU vs UM rivalry. If that doesn't give you a clear indication of how big "The Game" is, and its national significance, nothing will.

But there are also books about the Michigan vs. ND rivalry, such as a 319-book published this year titled, Natural Enemies: Major College Football's Oldest, Fiercest Rivalry-Michigan vs. Notre Dame (2007), 319 pages.
There are probably more books that focus on a ten year period of OSU vs UM, known as the "Ten Year War," than focus on the entire history of ND vs. UM.

"The rivalry was as big as Michigan-Ohio State rivalry."
The point here should be what comparison is made, and the nature of the comparison. While A might be compared to B as something it might approach, or replicate, no comparison is made of B to A.

My point is not that the Michigan v. ND rivalry is as great as the Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry, but it's still one of the best rivalries in the country.

It is at times, due largely to the relative success of the individual teams, rather than the merits of tradition. No great rivalry would even consider taking a break, but instead would look for ways to solidify the importance of the game.
