Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

OK. I just caught up on this thread and I have three thoughts.

1. Even though I am but another aspect of BKB's personality, as we all are, I find OSWho? to be a troll. If you can't back up what you have to say, pal, go try out a TSUN board and blow that fairy dust and manure there.

2. I still like the Asian century thing. RR is fine and becomes RRR, then RRRR with every ross.

3. The parallels between RR and John Cooper are striking. It is still very early days, but nothing I see tells me that this guy understands the program he has just inherited. Bo might have been one of us, but he "got it" up there. You fire every assistant, where is the link to a tradition that you yourself do not understand? I like this hire more and more by the day.

Agreed...I said the same a couple days ago.....

I think the only thing he understands about Michigan is the color scheme at this point.....that's NOT a good thing.....for Michigan at least

I originally posted this in the scUM recruiting thread, but obviously relevant here;

Wow, I'm suprised that he fired all of them. I understand it is his perogative, but with this opening due to a retirement and not a firing (of Carr) I expected him to retain/"rehire" at least a few.

It will be interesting to see the recruiting fallout and response from the Michigan Men.

It will also be interesting to see how far reaching rr is in building a staff. I hope for the B10's sake he doesn't just bring up his WVU staff and looks to expand his staffs knowledge and experience (although a weak scUM isn't all bad for a tOSU fan )

I hadn't thought of the loss of ties to scUM's traditions and history, not only had JT coached here, but he retained a few assistants to carry on Buckeye traditions. Maybe we could tag him Dumb, dumb and dumbRR :tongue2:

He said at Monday's presser that he'd be doing evaluations and planned to bring several with from WV, as well as look outside both staffs. We also knew Calvin Magee and Tony Gibson were coming from the get-go, which pretty clearly seemed to kick DeBord and Bedford to the curb. There were also rumblings that Gittleson's time had come and he'd be replaced with WV's S&C guy (which is fine by me, even though I'm very appreciative of his past contributions). English's status was also in jeopardy in wake of the hire, so that isn't necessarily shocking. I was sure Andy Moeller's recent DUI (Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius) would net him a pink slip no matter what.

What I didn't envision was Fred Jackson getting the boot though, and that might be costly in the short term (say goodbye to McGuffie?). I'll be sad to see him go, he was quite an asset. Apparently RR's plans rendered Loeffler and Campbell obsolete as well. Losing those three kind of pains me.
On balance the S&C change is a clear plus as TSUN had woes from soft preparation that pained their fans. The WVU scheme is closer that which the Buckeyes employ - lots of hard work in the off-season.

As for McGuffie, if he goes elsewhere - that would be a double whammy - not only losing a highly rated recruit. More important losing a highly regarded speed back that fits exactly the running style Rodney espouses.

We seem to have gotten away from one of the most important parts of this thread: What are we going to call the new coach of TSUN?

I have seen, Rich Rod, Dick Rod, Dick Wad, Rod Wad, I haven't yet seen a mention of sCUM Rod....any others to add? We should probably poll this too. When my youngest son (a 5th grader.....I know maybe too old for this) gets back from visiting grandparents in C-Bus, I will have him read through the thread and compile a complete list, and see if he has any to add too. :wink2:
Did a thread search and didn't find this so I submit a new name:
NimRod.

Does anybody know if Cooper kept anybody off of Bruce's staff when he took over?

Good question.

The way the Bruce firing went down my initial reaction would be "no" but I'll dig around and see what I can find.

EDIT

The all time assistant coaching list from the official site

Bob Palcic 1986-1991
Fred Pagac 1982-2000

appear to be the only names that cross the 1987/1988 barrier.

I am not at all surprised by the house cleaning. You have a program that has been under performing and you are changing your scheme on both sides of the ball.

Will it hurt recruiting? Perhaps short term. But keeping assistants who don't fit only prolongs the problem. Like OSU, UM recruits by name. Cooper was bringing in studs right to the very end. RR can make a ton of mistakes and he will still bring in solid classes the next few years because lots of kids just want to play for Michigan.

Pryor is big for OSU. He is HUGE for RR. With him they could hit the ground running. Without him they may limp by for a while. But only for a while.

RR isn't CW. He knows what the college game is about and has proven success at this level. It may take two to three years, but it is silly to think RR at UM wont produce better teams than he did at WVU. NC quality teams? Time will tell.

(FWIW I predict RR will have to do it without Pryor - and possibly without Mallett as well.)

Maybe I was squinting too hard, but I don't remember typing that.

The one I suggested was a Roman Numeral I in his first name--or "Bitch" if you prefer--for each loss to us. "RIch" after next year's game in The Shoe, "RIIch" The Game after that, "RIIIch" for the next one, and so on...

far be it for someone to mistake you, Mili, for Steve... :p

but i think sandgk was referring to this post from the Michigan Coaching Speculation thread (which, should have won a GP leaf, imo):

With the lost of continuity (with the loss of all the assistants) regarding Michigan tradition and specifically "The Game" I wonder if the respect and hard hitting integrity during the contest is now just a memory. I guess only time and next November will tell......

I don't think the loss of continuity regarding "the Michigan way", The Game or the loss of Ohio recruting ties can be over stated. All my other thoughts on RR's shortcomings aside, that part right there has been played out by OSU within the past 20 years and scUM seems determined to try and repeat it.

I initially said they hired their John L Smith, I'm thinking the parallels to Coop are getting very strong now(and no I don't think he could ever be as bad as Coop in The Game).

IMO in 5 years they will be desperate to go get a "Michigan Man" back in charge.

wouldn't those two outcomes be mutually exclusive? it seems that either TP becomes a scummer and the Legend hits the road, or TP decides he'd like to have shot at winning a couple of NCs and going on to the NFL and RR will have to hammer things out with Mallett, no?

my little brain can't imagine a scenario under which Rodregress would lose both TP and RM.

There is a way in which they are not related. There is also a way in which they can seem related and causative.

The causative and related version has TP declare for AA - this precipitates Ryan Mallett's departure to pastures anew.

The unrelated events version would have TP sticking with the Buckeyes on NLOID. Seperately, Mallett declares he is going to pastures anew - say because he finds that he is uncomfortable in a bastardized version of the RR offense, square peg in a round hole.

This would precipitate RR looking for an emergency solution at QB and TSUN suffers one checkered season.

R-Rod is no longer under contract to West Virginia. His resignation was changed to the 18th of December.

Thanks. I read a couple of days ago that his original date of Jan. 3rd was being revised to "Tuesday" (that article didn't mention the date, or use a word like 'yesterday'), and I incorrectly assumed that meant next Tuesday.
