Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

USF probably has more NFL talent than WVU.

One could make an argument that Pitt does as well.

Outside of Slaton, Dykes, and Devine is there even anybody on that WVU team that is a legitimate NFL prospect? Pat White is a great athlete, great college player, but he's not going to sniff the NFL.

West Virginia has 8 former players active on 53 man game day rosters in the NFL right now.

Pitt has 17 former players active on 53 man game day rosters, and USF has 6 former players active on 53 man game day rosters.

This notion that WVU is or has been loaded in comparison to Pitt and USF is just laughable. Pitt will always put out NFL players as the state of Pennsylvania is one of the most fertile for talent in America. South Florida is getting more and more talent to come to USF instead of going to Florida, Miami, and FSU. They are in THE most fertile recruiting state in the country and will be a power-team very soon. USF is a beautiful campus and is the second largest school in the state.

USF is stil a work in progress but things are looking good for them.

PITT on the other hand is a long standing member of CFB. Since 2002 (and maybe longer just didn't look) they have not posted a single 10 win season and they have not broke .500 in their last three seasons. I don't care how many NFL players came from PITT. If you can't win on the CF field then it just isn't there. If they have that kind of talant they should be better period.

Who are all of these NFL players on WVU's roster?

Right now Pitt has over twice the amount of active NFL players as WVU.

Pitt has recruited some pretty good players over the past 2-3 classes.

I would not be surprised at all to see the following wind up in the NFL over the next 2 years;

Jeff Otah (OT)
Aaron Berry (CB)
Scott McKillop (LB)
LeSean McCoy (RB)
Nate Bynham (TE)

There are some others that will probably be in the NFL in the next 3-4.

And just look at their class this year.

Lucas Nix is rated by Scout and Rivals as a 5* and one of the top 5 OT's in the country. Jonathan Baldwin was offered by everybody and is thought by many to be one of the top 5 receiver prospects in the country.

RR is that you???

If you want to argue that a well executed spread option is out-coaching that is exactly how RR has been so successful. I will give RR credit for that. His record the past three years is admirable under any circumstance.

But the issue of NFL players is not just recruitment - it is development. And that is where I see problems. In another thread the comment was made that RR would pass more at UM with Pryor because he is a better passer.

But I though White was a HS QB. Why, after 3 full years as a starter is he not a better passer? Who owns that?

When Troy Smith came to OSU he was labeled an athlete. He had a strong arm, but was not a QB in any other sense of the word. He would have been a heck of a spread option QB and IMO could have been the first Pat White had he gone to WVU.

Instead JT turned him into a Heisman winner who - despite being undersized for the NFL - will start his first game as a rookie this Sunday. That is player development.

We seem to have gotten away from one of the most important parts of this thread: What are we going to call the new coach of TSUN?

I have seen, Rich Rod, Dick Rod, Dick Wad, Rod Wad, I haven't yet seen a mention of sCUM Rod....any others to add? We should probably poll this too. When my youngest son (a 5th grader.....I know maybe too old for this) gets back from visiting grandparents in C-Bus, I will have him read through the thread and compile a complete list, and see if he has any to add too. :wink2:
I absolutely agree - we are slacking in our work buckiprof. :wink2:
Now we could go native and christen him Jose Jimenez - West Virginia's been berry berry good to me.

But that might go over the heads of even a TSUN graduate these days.

Dick Rod sounds too much like a B-movie porn name, and doesn't lend itself to the LLllloser alliteration afforded by Carr's moniker.

At this point the best I've heard is Mili's "Ricky the Rooser" - for which we need a Fark of Rodriguez done up in Mandarin Chinese garb.

I don't need a link. I watched him play.

Most of his snaps were from the shotgun, and when they threw the ball most of the time they used 4 wide sets.
Like Bleed S & G said - can you provide a link to back up what you're saying? Truly, I and others are actually interested in seeing the claim backed up by a reporter.

And if you show a couple such links here and they measure up I'll stop calling you Truly - how's that?

Whilst I and others have waited for something along those lines I've took the opportunity to look over the highlights of Ryan Mallett's High School career as offered by that wonderful intertube service YouTube.

What - no Gun?

What - No Gun?

What - No Gun?

Evidently throwing out of the gun is guaranteed highlight reel poison, or they were moments deemed unworthy of making those reels - which consistently have Mallett under center.

And this last - titled "Re:The Next Great Michigan Quarterback" just to lighten the mood a lot.

Ok here are the numbers: (# in league, average yrs. service in league)

Current members on a NFL roster*- (WVU 6, 7 years)

(USF 3, 3.33 years)

Based on current NFL rosters provided by NFL.com.

Recruiting rankings per Rivals (average ranking since 2002)

WVU 39-40th place
Pitt 34-35th place
USF 60th place

Rodriguez fires Michigan assistant coaches

Rodriguez fires Michigan assistant coaches

There is a possibility defensive line coach Steve Stripling may be rehired.
Rodriguez, who was on campus Wednesday and Thursday to meet with football operations personnel and observe bowl practices, sat down with the coaches one by one on Thursday and to give each the news.

"He told us all, and we respect him for that," said Erik Campbell, who played football for Michigan and has been receivers coach under Lloyd Carr. "It's part of the profession. It's good for us because now we have closure.
"We knew the possibility that he would not rehire us was there. You never know until you here the words, and today was the day."
The staff will remain intact under Carr through the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1. Carr announced his retirement Nov. 19 after 13 seasons as head coach.
"I understand that's the profession, and he has to be loyal to his guys," defensive coordinator Ron English said. "I'm not angry. The opportunity has been awesome. I've grown here."
Several coaches indicated earlier this week a strong sense that Rodriguez, the 44-year-old coach who comes here from West Virginia, would "clean house" in terms of the coaching staff.
Last summer, Carr worked out a contract with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin that would give his assistants an additional year of salary after this season.
"You expect it when there's change like this -- this is not a shocker," Campbell said. "For me, it's a disappointment, because I grew up here. I went to school here. It's just disappointing."
Campbell said all of the coaches have been through this before and will recover.
"We're coaches, and we're all great coaches, and we've all been at different programs," Campbell said. "Of course we're all disappointed, because we would all like to be here.
"But it's all over. It's a new beginning."
Rodriguez has not yet shaped up his Michigan staff yet. He did bring with him Monday for his formal announcement offensive coordinator Calvin Magee and defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator Tony Gibson.

He better hire some folks with good Ohio ties...Loeffler was big in Ohio. English was a dynamic personality...
English brought in 4 California kids into last years class - and was reportedly tied to a couple of others this year - help for the leaky defensive back squad in AA.

His departure is far from insignificant.

There were some coaches that needed to be replaced in there for sure, but there were some good ones he could have used. Not a good move in my opinion, didn’t he say he was going to watch the entire staff during bowl preparation before making any decisions, I guess that wasn’t really the case after all.

-I hope to god Dick Rod brings his DC with him.

-Losing Loeffler can't help with the Pryor situation.

-I don't care if we lose some to Zook here and again if it means the Ohio well goes dry for scUM.

Oswho, I'd like to see some kind of documentation for this as well. It's both customary and reasonable in a debate to substantiate one's claim(s), particularly when an issue is in dispute. "I saw it" unfortunately does not constitute evidence, and at least one other witness here contends the opposite.

Perhaps my Google-fu skills require improvement, but the only (scant) media clippings I've been able to find seem to indicate that Mallett's HS coach Barry Norton's offense is based on the Pro-I.

What does he plan to do? Bring the entire WVU staff to scUM? This just keeps getting better and better. If scUM fans who know anything about football weren't already skeptical of this hire before they sure should be now. You go out and hire a snake and you get what you deserve is going to be the moral of this story. Next to January 7th I can't wait for November 22nd to get here.
