how bout peterson at bsu? maybe he's ready to run with the big boys if they go undefeted and get screwed again
You want another gimmicky coach? It's easy to win in potato country when you play that schedule...BCS schools are another thing. Look at Dan Hawkins.

Dammit NF, why don't you stick to the "Still an Ass" thing? That was the point I was going to make.

I'd love to see them take the BSU coach and get the same result that Colorado did. Or they could go the more direct route and just hire Hawkins himself. I hear he'll have some free time coming up, in between intra-murals.

The Tenuous Case For Keeping Rich Rodriguez

The simple fact that they have to have this conversation three years after his hiring is enough proof that he needs to go. Three years is more than enough to "turn around a program". Don't really know how Michigan needed to be turned around as it was.

Great blog, Brian. But you shouldn't alienate your readers like you just did. Your tone is a little too condesending to people who read your blog religiously. Also, taking your point:

"You hire a coach for the long term. I think you fire a coach for the short term, though, and the point at which you boot the last guy is when you think the next year isn't going to meet a reasonable minimum threshold of progress. I completely understand people who have hit that point. You can save your comments about how he needs to go—neither I nor anyone else cares to hear it for the one millionth time in the last three days. It's an understandable position"

When Rodriguez was hired in 2008, what were his long term expectations? If I remember correctly, you yourself expect our team to be rebuilt by 2010, and later contracted that statement saying that we would be ready much later. Call me crazy, but I think three seasons is a reasonable amount of time to gauge long term expectations. I'm not accusing you of this, but I for one don't want my expecations to continuously shift based on our current performance. If we gave Rich Rod three years back in 2008 to show us some mojo, that expectation should not change three years down the line based on the current status of the team.

Very true. If you told 2008 scUM fans where this program would be at the end of RR's third year, then the overwhelming majority would say DEAR GOD DON'T HIRE HIM. Keep changing your standards due to mediocre performance than all you can expect is mediocre results.

scUM bloggers and "reporters" like dickrod because he's the polar opposite of Lloyd when it comes to the media. He talks to them, they have access to the program and the "inside" info that is so valuable in selling subscriptions and getting site hits. That is why guys like beaver and the folks at mgoblog defend him so voraciously. If he goes, chances are they might be faced with somebody who sees them as a nuisance again. It's so transparent it's not even funny.

While I think that's exactly what the case is with Beaver (and agree that it is sickeningly transparent) I don't think that's the case with Brian at MGoBlog. His posts are always highly informed, backed up by facts and statistics. If you've never read any, take a look at some of the UFR (Upon Further Reviews) that he comes up with. Very high level play-by-play analysis that assigns points on player performance.

While Brian is the "high brow" types of scUM fan, he is not without faults however. He is very clearly contradicting himself numerous times in defense of RR (between the expectations when hired and now that he is woefully underperforming). Could it be for the reasons you said? I guess you can't rule it out. I haven't seen much change in "insider info" from MGoBlog dating before, during, and after the coaching change.
