Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but Im very curious to see if he says anything about the rivalry like Tress did when he was given the job. That definitly won a few folks over and showed that he understood the magnitude of the rivalry. I wonder if RR will be able to comprehend how big this thing is.
I'm sorry, but what he pulled on his players was unacceptable. Come to think about it, hell, I wouldn't expect anything less from a guy trying to fit in at scUM.

I'm curious about that too, but I'm guessing he keeps his mouth shut about the rivalry. It really was pretty ballsy for Tressel to say what he said considering OSU was probably going to have the weaker team the coming year and the game was in Ann Arbor. It was huge for JT to win that game in 2001 and give himself a little breathing room in the rivalry. RichRod is going to be against it next year coming into Columbus with a team that should be much weaker than OSU unless some strange things happen between now and then.

In my opinion, saying "You'll be proud of our young people in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the football field" is no win guarantee. 310 marks the end of the season, and he's saying tOSU community will be proud- not victorious.

It was a guarantee without actually saying "guarantee." The people in that arena didn't cheer for that remark because they were looking forward to a jolly good show where each man truly gave his all.

Honestly with Pryor wanting to probably be on the scene in football and basketball how could scUM be above tOSU.

But... the Brew Crew missed his game on sat so I don't know if that will weigh on his decision at all.

Tricky Dicky was slimy not by leaving before a big bowl game but by telling a recruit before he told his team, AD or President. Personally that's kinda like getting married to a person you cheated with, you always have that feeling they will cheat on you because they probably will. And if the situation goes as bad as I hope it does he'll jump ship up there too. Plus what is going on with scUM's facility debacles?

RR's built WVU on being able to admit "questionable" recruits with some sketchy backgrounds.

That stuff won't fly in Ann Arbor.

Yea, you're right. He won't have to. Sure the standards are higher but he is drawing from a much larger "pool" so to speak.

I am an LSU fan and don't have an interest in your whole rivalry with UM.

However, I have enough sense to know that you as Ohio St. fans should be fairly worried about that game from now on. However you want to downplay this hiring, poke fun for them taking too long, laugh at his offense. I think the offense that he is going to run will give many teams in your division trouble. Think about his offense at WVU, it was a very good one. Just imagine him having better players to run it. WVU isn't exactly a top tier university, but Michigan is. It may take a while to get everything going, and you will probably beat them in the immediate future. But speaking for a few years later I think you are going to have a hell of a game on your hands. He is going to pull in some big name recruits and bring a whole new level of offense to your division. Imagine Illinois' offense x 10.:wink2:

The reason that the spread-option offense is so difficult to defend is because you see it once every two years. When you have a week to teach your defensive linemen completely new assignments and train your defensive backs to play a style that is different from anything you have run all season, then you are often times in for some trouble. But the more you see the offense, the more familiar you become with it, the easier it becomes to stop because the assignments aren't all brand new. There is a thread on defending the spread option around here somewhere that touches very heavily on this point.

The other thing you are forgetting is that he had the best players in the Big East and still lost to other Big East teams. So he will go to the Big Ten, where he has the second best group of players, and improve his record against other Big Ten teams? It's not like RR suddenly gets better players but we are stuck with UC's roster. He get's better players, but so do his competition.

Besides his quarterback can't play like Juice or Leak every year against us. Statistically its impossible.

By Larry Lage
Associated Press

Published on Monday, Dec 17, 2007
ANN ARBOR, MICH.: Michigan hired Rich Rodriguez away from his alma mater after failing to bring back one of its own.
A man with ties to both the Wolverines and West Virginia might've helped.
College football's winningest program ended its coaching search Sunday, nearly a month after it started, by announcing Rodriguez would succeed retiring Lloyd Carr.
Rodriguez is scheduled to be introduced as the Wolverines' coach at a news conference this morning.
''I am thrilled to have Rich Rodriguez as Michigan's new coach,'' Athletic Director Bill Martin wrote in an e-mail to the Associated Press. ''Rich brings an exciting brand of football to Michigan Stadium. We welcome the entire Rodriguez family to Ann Arbor.''

UM reels in Rodriguez
West Virginia pipeline tapped

By ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR - The long-awaited search for a head football coach at the University of Michigan is over. West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez accepted the position yesterday and will be introduced at 9 a.m. today after he met with Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman and athletic director Bill Martin at an undisclosed location in Toledo on Friday to discuss the coaching vacancy. Rodriguez, 44, met with his former players at West Virginia at approximately 2:45 yesterday afternoon and said, "I've accepted the job at the University of Michigan." Rodriguez then turned around and abruptly walked out of the room, according to a team member present at the meeting. Rodriguez also called the country's top-ranked high school quarterback to alert him of the news yesterday. "I just spoke to Coach Rodriguez about 10 minutes ago, and he told me he is going to Michigan," Terrelle Pryor told Superprep.com. "[Rodriguez] said they made him an offer he can't refuse."

MICHAEL ROSENBERG: U-M didn't make a good hire -- it made a great one

December 17, 2007
BY MICHAEL ROSENBERG
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST
Michigan hired a great football coach Sunday. Not a good one, like Greg Schiano. Not a very good one, like Les Miles. A great one.
Rich Rodriguez basically invented the spread-option offense. He has done an outstanding job by any measure at West Virginia. For years, the Mountaineers were considered well-coached overachievers under Don Nehlen, and Rodriguez has somehow improved on Nehlen's success.

Rodriguez fits Michigan's most fundamental criteria: He is a proven head coach from a major conference, he is young enough (44) to potentially stay in Ann Arbor for 15 to 20 years, and he has recruited the Midwest. For the Michigan football fan who has complained incessantly for the last 10 years, Rodriguez might as well show up at this morning's news conference dressed in wrapping paper and a bow.
Have you been begging for a spread offense? Coach Rod practically invented it. Do you want a defense that can stop the spread? Rodriguez's defense will face the spread every day in practice. Have you been begging for fresh blood? Rodriguez, with no ties to U-M, might as well come from another continent.
So that's all great. But before anybody pencils U-M into the national title game every year, I hope everybody understands the essential challenge of Rodriguez's tenure:
