Rodriguez's recruits stick up for Michigan coach

By Kyle Nagel
Staff Writer

Tuesday, April 22, 2008
It was at the seemingly innocent "Coach Tressel's Spring Preview" luncheon earlier this month that the newest round of Rich Rodriguez criticism began.
Jim Tressel, the Ohio State football coach, spoke to a crowd of 1,100 at the fundraiser benefiting the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio. Tressel completed the program that included a silent auction and appearances from OSU assistants as well as special guest Frank Broyles, the former Arkansas coach and athletic director, by answering questions from the crowd.
Tressel was asked if there is, indeed, a gentleman's agreement between Big Ten coaches not to recruit players verbally committed to other schools.
Then came five words that have received a lot of play on the Internet, in newspapers and on talk shows.
"I guess," Tressel said, "only between gentlemen."

Press clipping: Rich Rodriguez would be wise to fire agent and lawyer

FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES ? April 23, 2008
The Register-Herald recently wrote an editorial about Rich Rodriguez and his pending legal issues with West Virginia University. Here is an excerpt:

{Advertisement}

Rich Rodriguez obviously isn?t as smart as he thought he was, and neither are his agent and lawyer.

The chips are piling up on the side of WVU in this contest of Texas Hold ?em. Both sides are all in and it?s looking more and more like WVU is holding a pair of aces and Rodriguez has drawn a pair of Jokers, i.e., agent Mike Brown and Robon.

One of these days when Rodriguez deflates that ultra-large ego of his ? and that could be years from now ? he?s going to realize how his own guys took him to the cleaners.

More from Larry Aschebrook.

Aschebrook developing career during ongoing lawsuit
By Mike Casazza
Daily Mail sportswriter

MORGANTOWN - Larry Aschebrook began his new job at Arizona State Monday and while he's trying to rediscover the low profile he once enjoyed as a fundraiser at West Virginia University, he hasn't closed the book on his past.

"Larry is moving on in his career and he's more interested in developing his new position at Arizona State," said Aschebrook's lawyer, Wheeling's R. Dean Hartley, "but he's still concerned by the recent events."

That concern includes the damage done to his reputation by what happened last week, as well as possible legal recourse.

The WV attorneys had so much fun on Monday deposing RR that they decided to continue the party today.

[/SIZE] Depositions continue Wednesday. Rich Rodriguez went looking for a job at the University of Michigan, according to recent documents filed in the case.
Attorneys for West Virginia University have obtained new documents that show Rodriguez' representatives contacted Michigan on Dec. 11 to gauge their interest in him as their new head football coach.
Three days later, Michigan officials met with the former coach in Ohio to start hammering out a deal.
During his deposition on Monday, Rodriguez also testified that his original buyout clause in Michigan was set at $2 million. Rodriguez requested that the buyout be raised to $4 million, the documents said.
Depositions continue Wednesday in the case between WVU and Rodriguez over payment of his $4 million buyout with the Mountaineers.

Why would RR request his buyout be raised to $4 million? His testimony on Monday also contradicts his agent's assertions reported in the Pittsburgh paper [ LINK ]that RR did not contact UM officials when he traveled to Toledo. RR's attorneys consistently stated that they could not wait for depositions to start so the public could know the truth. LOL!!! It's a good thing the judge did not impose a gag order on the parties.

Hmmm...

December 1: RR and WVU choke against Pitt.
December 11: RR contacts UM.

I'd really be interested in knowing what occurred in those 10 days that led to RR wanting to get out of dodge.

I am guessing nine returned phone calls saying "Sorry, not interested."

Could very well have happened.

The direction I was considering more was did RR just figure he had reached HIS pinnacle with WVU, and that the NC was just not going to happen there or was it something else? Personally, if I just had what amounts to a huge stamp of failure on my resume (when it comes to getting it done in the crunch); then would I really be shopping myself around for a better gig? I realize that RR and I don't (nor never will) think alike, but I was trying to consider it strictly from a professional standpoint. Anyway...

Perhaps I am confused. Is the current dispute because RR doesn't want to pay the $4 million, or is he trying to raise it again?

You know....I wouldn't put it past him to think that the buyout meant he got the $2million, so he wanted to raise it to $4.

I believe you nailed it. The WV contract buyout goes both ways, i.e., RR would be entitled to payment if WV terminated the contract without just cause. So far there is no signed contract with UM, only the term sheet. I would not be surprised to see a clause similar to the WV buyout clause inserted into the final UM contract (assuming he makes it that far).
