Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

You know, if he was the decent, misunderstood guy so many scUM fan's want to believe he is, at some point this crap would stop. But everytime you think maybe that's it, more comes out.

This isn't more legal hullabaloo that can be dismissed as more bitter West Virginians with an agenda, this was his star pupil.

Whatever, as I used to say regularly in the Barry Bonds thread...

Still an ass...

I can't wait for his first sideline temper tantrum/hissy fit.

Devil's advocate: Why would Pat White make these comments? It's water under the bridge. What's his motivation for smearing his ex-coach?

Just out of curiosity, what question did he get asked?

I would assume he was asked "what is different" or what it is like under the new coach.

Anyways, I hate that style.. I think there are much, much better ways to teach kids how to play football and be good people. Although, it would be the definition of irony if Rodriguez was trying to teach morals. Keep running him through the mud, Pat. It's amusing.

Just wanted to pick up on the reference to "that style" - which is how the UM folks described it. A hard nosed throwback who makes kids work.

This is where White's comment really hits. He says they were embarrassed instead of coached. No style is valid without coaching (i.e. teaching).

To be clear, I am sure RR does some teaching. But that is not the way White put it.

Agreed.. it's definitely possible to be a hard-nosed throwback coach, but from what I've heard, Rodriguez isn't that. The guys who personified the hard-nosed style (I can definitely think of one coach who personifies the style) cared about the kids. If I remember correctly, Rodriguez stated publicly that he really doesn't want/care to here about what these kids have to say. He's just going to push, push, push and hope they can take it.

When I think throwback, I don't necessarily think embarrassment.. I'm sure it was there to some degree, but there was also a degree of caring about the players. Just doesn't seem to be there with this guy.

I could be wrong. I don't know him.

One case in point from a Buckeye perspective. Let us call it the grudging acceptance of Cooper.

After Bruce was fired Cooper was hired, in large part I remember, because of his win as HC at Az. State against TSUN in the Rose Bowl.

Bruce was widely admired, despite the travails of the football team on the field. Same I believe can be said about Carr. Cooper had some shoes to fill in terms of winning (Buckeyes wanted those championships, wanted those Rose Bowl appearances and certainly wanted to beat TSUN). Buckeye fans also wanted to be sure about their new leader's ability to step up as a representative of The Ohio State University. There was suspicion about Cooper's winning credentials amongst some Buckeye fans, one Rose Bowl win doth not a dynasty make. But, what raised eyebrows first around Columbus was an apparently minor deviation for Cooper from past behavior, but it was a major sign to fans that things were very, very different in terms of the coaches character.

<snip>

Yet you would have us believe that the far worse things surrounding RR are not a cause for you to question his character?

I sat in Block-O my frosh year at tOSU. It was Coops first year running the program. During pregame of the first home game for students Coop came up to Block-O and talked to all of us.

I've said in other posts that I really didn't remember how things went down with EB being let go, and yet I didn't have warm-fuzzies for Coop at the time... but what I do know is that from the time that he talked to us in Block-O that day, I didn't trust him.

I know that it's a reach to say that one can judge character of a man from a talk in that setting... but there is no way in hell I would have lent the man $10 after that day.

It was a strange feeling that I knew that on one side I should be supporting the guy... but on the other side I just knew that something strange was afoot at the Circle-K.

... and that's exactly the way I would feel about RR. The points have been made by others, so I'm not going to re-hash. But at the end of the day, anyone who pulls what he pulled with his alma mater cannot, should not and would never be trusted by me.

Something strange is afoot at the Circle-A... it will be a matter of time before we all see just how bad it is. IMO having a guy like RR as your coach is like banging a chick after finding Genital Herpes Information - Welcome to VALTREX.com on her bathroom sink.

Support the man as the coach of your program... but stop supporting him when the program takes a hit as a result. TSUN has far too much tradition and pride to take a "by any means necessary" approach to winning. Don't forego your pride to get an extra win or two a year. It ain't worth it.

Best of luck to ya'll. You're going to need it.

You're right but you're wrong....in context, RR was asked if he takes input from the players regarding the playbook.

Amazing that after the 2 pages worth of posts after what Pat White said about Dick, you quote one sentence out of one post that doesn't address focus on the Pat White comments and subsequent posts.

Someone who embarrasses and treats his players like garbage, IS NOT someone who would throw a friend under the bus by orchestrating a story about an assistant coach who cannot/will not be offered a head coaching job because of the color of their skin.
