Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Outside of one bad outing, Latos has been great for about 9 past starts

I would definitely not say great. Don't forget Arizona and Cleveland shelled him, and 2 of his starts were on the west coast. In his last 3 game plus (meaning including this game) he has given up 11 runs in 17.2 innings. After his Milwaukee start and the West coast trip I really hoped he turned a corner. Yet since then his ERA is near 6.

Some of that can be misleading as well though. The Cleveland game was a fluke instigated by the home plate umpire. His strike zone was about 6 inches tall that game and both pitchers had to groove the strike zone or walk batters, much like Cueto had to deal with last night. Arizona is a pretty good offensive team. He hasnt been a Cy Young pitcher this year but when he gets it going, he can be really dominant. Take away the first inning tonight and he's been awesome really against another pretty good offensive team. All said and done, after April ended, he's been worth the trade, imo.

You can say the same thing about Volquez. Take away an inning or terrible outing here and there and he is great. Heck, you can do that with just about any pitcher.

I didnt say take away his outing, he just wasnt totally responsible for that Cleveland game. Wasnt much else he could do there unless he struck everyone out. No pitcher can go unscathed and I dont think thats what we expect from him, just a dominant performance once in awhile to remind us his value was worth the trade. Our rotation right now is humming and he's a big part of it.

Latos is only 24 though, just a month older than Leake. Cueto and Bailey are both 26. He's a young pup with ace stuff.

I don't care that Walt traded a bunch of prospects that were blocked, but I do wish they could've worked out a package that kept either Alonso or Grandal for a different deal.

Wouldn't have minded this either.

I could still end up being wrong, but what you stated is mostly my point with the guys they traded. They traded a lot for him, and even though they were blocked they still had a ton of value.

If he becomes the ace some people think he will be, fan freaking tastic. Yet he is very inconsistent and as much as people don't like it, he is the worst pitcher on the staff. Games in April still count. All pitchers run up against tight strike zones. All pitchers go against good offenses. Overall he has been mediocre at best so far and I think everyone expected more. Maybe he will suddenly turn into an ace, and I hoped that much recently. Yet as soon as it looks that way he pitches a turd.

... I say that yet having Grandal right now probably still doesn't help the Reds, since the two teams the Reds would possibly want to take pieces from (the Twins and Phillies) don't need a catcher.
