Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Choo
Phillips
Votto
Ludwick
Bruce
Rolen/Frazier
Cozart
catcher
pitcher

Yes, please! Question is, who would cover CF defensively - Choo or Bruce. Seems like either might be capable, but neither would be ideal. The benefits of getting a bat like his at the top of the order would outweigh that though.

I'd put Choo in center. I think he moves better than Bruce and Bruce's arm is slightly stronger in any case.

I would rather have Pence or Span, but Choo would work. I wouldn't want to give up any of the major league club (except Stubbs) to get him though. It also looked like the entire front office was in Colorado today...it seems like the Reds have been mentioned in talks about every available OFer in baseball...hopefully they can drive up the price of whoever it is the Pirates are after while they're at it.

Choo is a hell of a consolation prize. .292/.383/.475/.859 is a HUGE upgrade over Stubbs's .247/.320/.402/.722. Choo's career slash line tops both Bruce and Phillips (and Pence and Span, for that matter). His OPS is comparable to Ludwick's best years (.857) across his four seasons as a Cardinal (and of course this year, which is not surprising since Ludwick is an extreme fly ball hitter that feasts in NL Central parks - and Colorado).

Baseball Reference suggests that Choo's #1 Similarity Score peer is ... Justin Upton. Left handed Upton for nearly $2m less without the 10 cent brain?

What would the Indians want?

Juan Pierre - OF - Phillies

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Reds' coaching staff "loves" outfielder Juan Pierre.

And the Reds believe Pierre would be a "perfect fit" for their roster down the stretch, adds Nightengale. The veteran speedster is batting .306/.346/.373 this season with 23 stolen bases in 27 chances. Philly should be plenty open to moving him before Tuesday's deadline.

If they could get him for little to nothing, I would be all for it as long as Dusty is told he cannot use him as a starter. If they got him and released Cairo I would be all for it. Pierre is left handed, hits righties well, gets on base, and still runs pretty well. He would be a great bat off the bench and could play the OF here and there. Of course Heisey's role would be reduced even more while Valdez's role would increase. Having a left handed batter to PH, especially one that can get on base, would be a plus.

Yet 3 things will happen. 1) Dusty will want to start him in CF where Pierre's defense becomes a liability. 2) Dusty will refuse to get rid of Cairo, so that means Heisey is sent to AAA and Pierre is not really an upgrade. 3) The Reds would also probably overpay for him. So that is the main reason I was down on him. Yet if those can be mitigated somehow (might require Dusty getting a lobotomy), I wouldn't mind Pierre.

Yep. You can't afford to have Gomes or Pierre-type players on this team with Dusty in charge. Those kind of players can be useful in their proper roles, but Dusty can't be trusted to use them that way. It's better to be without a player like either of them than to have them and misuse them at the expense of other players n the team.

DO NOT WANT.
