Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

Ubaldo is probably closer to Cueto. Would you take Wood, Volquez, and Alonso for Cueto? I wouldn't.

But thats my point, as reds fans Alonzo is worthless to us. We're sick of Volquez and down on Wood. To another team Alonzo is a potential middle of the order slugging 1B. Wood and EV are young and have potential etc etc etc.

Would I listen to another team offering 2 young near MLB ready arms and a bat like Alonzo's? Absolutely.

Even if Alonso was a true left fielder (a position of need), I wouldn't do it. Neither Volquez or Wood have shown to be able to consistently throw in the majors, and Alonso is a complete unknown.

I really think you are talking up Wood and Volquez a bit too much by calling them young near MLB ready arms. Volquez has spent plenty of time in the majors, and has shown over and over again he is a basket case with no control. Wood pitched well for a while, but certainly does not have electric stuff. He may turn out to be a decent player, but he could easily be a AAAA type player. Alonso is probably the only one that really projects as a player that could possibly make up for what you lose in a starter. Yet that is a risk.

If it wasn't a young pitcher who is relatively cheap and under contract for a while, yeah, I would listen. Yet that is not the case. Bird in the hand.

I personally don't think either one of them is worth a plug nickel but these GM's never let go of the "upside/we can fix him" thing. I could easily see EV and Wood having value in other teams eyes and Alonzo isn't that far from a Smoak that netted a rental of Cliff Lee last year iirc.

Perception is reality, if I had to I could sell the positives of EV and Wood and not feel I was completely lying. :wink2:

Well you did ask what I would do. If they can pull the wool over the eyes of the Rockies' GM, great. Yet I wouldn't expect it to happen.

I do understand Alonso has value, but is still an unknown. Plus Cliff Lee was in the final year of a contract. That is not the case here, so the Rockies can demand much more. The Mariners had to trade Lee or be left with nothing. If the Rockies demand more and don't get it, they still are left with Ubaldo through 2014 at a good price.

continuing on the trade rumor front...reports are that the Mets are indeed going to pay the rest of Beltrans salary and its just a matter of what top notch talent they can get back.

Again, when it comes to prospects, the Reds should be able to get anyone they want. He's a pure rental with no comp picks coming.

The Mets are such a dysfunctional mess. One minute they give away a guy for a bag of peanuts in order to drop salary, and the next say they will eat salary in order to get prospects.

We'll take what we can get.

OK Walt go get us Jiminez, Adams and Beltran. Make it snappy, the clock is ticking.

From Passan's yahoo column today;

A scout familiar with the Rockies? plans said the team is focusing on infielders and starting pitchers ? and he made certain to emphasize the plural in both. Two years of Ubaldo ? he has the right to cancel the $9 million option for 2014 if traded ? plus the draft picks that could come if the current free-agent-compensation system stays in place ? equates to at least three potential impact, close-to-or-in-the-major-leagues players for the Rockies, plus one on whom O?Dowd and his right-hand men, Bill Geivett and Bill Schmidt, can dream.

Alonzo, Wood, Volquez, maybe Hamilton and do it before they change their mind.

lulz, 0-6 i think, 9 LOB...

but pitching is the problem!!

Gotta be careful with one game samples. The Reds are 5th in MLB, 1st in the NL, in runs scored. They are 22nd in ERA.

Perhaps the problem last night was their opponent is 8th in MLB, 5th in the NL, in ERA? :wink2:

They still lead the NL in runs scored. Someone is hitting something sometime.

overrated stat, what has that led them? to being 2 games under .500, since Mid may, they have lost a lot more low scoring game than high scoring....they lead the NL in runs, 1)cause of their start in April, 2)they will burst out for 12 runs in one game, both of those skew it
