Reds tidbits (2010 season)

I'm really surprised there isnt more talk of the possibility of getting Cliff Lee around here. This thing could be real if Castellini puts his money where his mouth is.

Reportedly, the Mariners really want Yonder Alonso and he really has no space on our roster for the forseeable future. The Reds would most likely throw in LeCure and two other minor leaguers not in AAA for Lee's services. Cliff has been on record stating that he liked living in Ohio having been with Cleveland so there's also a real possibility of keeping him past this season with Harangs contract and probably Arroyo's falling off the books.

What a rotation that would be adding Cliff! It sounds so feasible I dont know why it hasnt already been done really. I hope this isnt just a bunch of smoke but there are more than 1 source putting this out there and 700 has been talking about it for a week now. Please let this happen.

It has 40+ pages over at RZ, I just figured there was no need to repeat everything over here.

I'm not writing them off yet by any means, but the prospect of a Cardinals implosion excites me. They've consistently managed to turn dog shit into diamonds for the last fifteen years. For once I'd like to see the dog shit just remain dog shit.

I'm 100% with you there.

The Pujols caddies drive me fucking insane and I still seethe hate for the whole George Grande/Jim Edmonds public display of man crush thing.

For the Reds' Rhodes, Pitching Becomes a Tribute
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: July 6, 2010

Arthur Rhodes will leave tickets for five people at the All-Star Game on Tuesday in Anaheim. His mother will be there, and two sisters, a niece and his 16-year-old daughter, Jade. Five women supporting a 40-year-old rookie All-Star.

A boy will be there, too. Rhodes, a left-handed reliever for the Cincinnati Reds, is sure of it. Rhodes's son, Jordan, was 5 when he died in December 2008 of an undisclosed illness. Whenever Rhodes pitches, he scratches the initials "J R" in the dirt of the mound. He will do so again at the All-Star Game.

"I feel like he's right behind the rubber, watching me pitch," Rhodes said.

Rhodes spoke softly at his locker Tuesday before a game with the Mets at Citi Field. He rarely says much, anyway. He signed with the Reds the week his son died, but club officials never knew of his pain. On Sunday, when Manager Dusty Baker told Rhodes he had made the All-Star team, he said Rhodes was stoic.

Cont'd ...

Gotta love Corky Miller, (aside from being a fat guy with a fu manchu), he put the finger down for the fastball inside and Cordero shook him off, so he put the finger down again for the fastball inside and Cordero got a pop-up out of it.

I have no idea why Cordero won't pitch inside, but it drives me up the wall. Every pitch ... away away away. If Miller will do what Hernandez and Hanigan won't, -- get Cordero out of his comfort zone to make him more effective, -- more power to him.

Arroyo is so valuable to this club. Terribly underrated.

Great win tonight, and they're done by 9:40 so I can watch something else. Let's go Rockies!

I go into uncontrollable epileptic seizures when Cordero comes in to close a game.

If anything costs the Reds the Central it's poor closing from Cordero down the stretch.

Ought to try switching him to set-up and Rhodes to closer if he keeps this nerve-racking closing up!

Cordero is kind of a turd. I wish we could have a different closer, but he gets paid too much and another closer via trade would cost too much in addition to make it happen.

I agree about Arroyo. Sure, he'll go out and totally bomb one every couple months to the tune or 10 ER in 2/3 of an inning, but the rest of the time he's a pretty consistent workhorse. I hope he's back next year. The Reds will need a guy like him in the midst of the other young arms.

Taking 2/3 in this series is a bonus in my book. The Reds started two rookies, one of them on short rest. They're also relying heavily on other rookies in the bullpen. They had every reason to lose this series, and they found a way to win it. Carry this momentum clear through the break.

If you offered me 7 wins before the 14 game pre AS break stretch I would have taken it in a heartbeat. Now they have 7 wins heading into the last 3 games with Philly.

They'll still blow it though its just a matter of time. They suck.

I wish Dusty didn't have an implant that apparently makes his dead explode if he doesn't use Cordero every time a save is possible. It is amazing. As soon as there is a save situation in comes Cordero. Matchups don't matter. How much Cordero has pitched doesn't matter.

Hey Dusty....The rule book defines what a save it. It does not mean you have to bring in your closer every time a save is possible. You know. Like when 4 out of the next 5 hitters are left handed, you might want to think about using that All Star left hander. I know, call me crazy for wanting a team to play matchups instead of trying appease the overpaid closer by handing him worthless stats.
