Heywood.

Pete Vuckovich
was the guy who played him.

That's the guy! I couldn't remember the name.

the fact that I can't find a decent picture of Corky on Google is epic fail.

Tough night for Maloney making his debut opposite Santana. Gotta say, while he was serviceable in this start I wasn't impressed with his 'stuff.' You've got problems when your lack of an out-pitch leads to a 12-pitch AB against a former AL pitcher.

I don't know that Maloney is a piece of the puzzle long-term.

Left out the big part. I was pissed that whole at bat. He kept throwing the same crap in the same location, and Santana kept pulling it foul (often hard). It was only a matter of time. Of course Corky is part to blame.

and no, he is not a part of the long term puzzle. There is a reason LeCure and Wood were brought up before him, and the reason it wasn't LeCure this time is he is on the DL (that, and it happened to be Maloney's outing in AAA on the same exact day). I expect Maloney to be a deal sweetener in a future trade.

It may not have been the Reds but that helps heal the open wound from when St. Louis did that to us in 2005.

Wow. I've been checking the scores of their games pretty intently along with ours to keep tabs on how many games ahead we are. I was at the bar and saw they were up 9-1 on the bottom line, didn't even bother to check when I got home-- I'd resigned myself to the fact that we were back to just 1 game up. Thanks for the good news:)

I wasn't impressed with Maloney either, but looking at it on paper, the Reds should've lost this game. After beating Roy Halladay and winning games some of the crazy ways they have lately I can't complain too much about this one. I'm just glad Maloney was able to hang in there long enough to somewhat save the bullpen.

Cards give up 9 in the bottom of the 9th to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Colorado.

Cards Talk forum at STLToday:

Sports - Forums - Cards Talk

Grab some popcorn ... there's at least 10 pages of anger. They're ready to fire LaRussa, hang Franklin, and DFA Randy Winn (who took "don't allow any doubles over your head" to mean "stand on the warning track while a bunch of singles fall in front of you in RF").

It's a beautiful thing.

An autopsy after reading a bit of the STL Today forums.

Cards are 18-23 on the road, haven't finished a road trip with a record better than .500 since the first week of the season, and were pounded on their recent West Coast swing. Wow, that sounds familiar!

They finish on the road heading into the break, come out and have to play four versus both LA and PHI at home, then go out on the road again to CHI and NYM.

The offense, already MLB-average on a good day, is now without Ludwick until at least July 18 (after the LA series) and Freese. Their one strength, the pitching staff, is going supernova. Penny and Lohse are on the DL, Carpenter may be headed there after Saturday with a forearm injury, and the once reliable bullpen is a shambles.

Cards were 15-14 in May, 13-13 in June, and 2-3 so far in July. If you add in the loss to the Reds on April 30, the Cards are one game under .500 since starting the season 15-7.

2 games back doesn't seem like a lot, but STL is closer to LA for the wildcard than they are Cincinnati for the Central. They're 3Ws in the hole because they've played two fewer games. Given the Reds own injury issues with Volquez, Bailey, and now Harang, it really looks like this race could wind up being a war of attrition down the stretch.

If two or three games ends up being the difference between the NL Central pennant and not making the playoffs at all since the wild card will wind up coming out of the East or West, then the Reds need to go after Lee or Haren, and sooner rather than later. If you know you're going to pull the trigger, do it now so you get two or three extra starts out of the guy you get. Those starts might be the difference.

I'm really surprised there isnt more talk of the possibility of getting Cliff Lee around here. This thing could be real if Castellini puts his money where his mouth is.

Reportedly, the Mariners really want Yonder Alonso and he really has no space on our roster for the forseeable future. The Reds would most likely throw in LeCure and two other minor leaguers not in AAA for Lee's services. Cliff has been on record stating that he liked living in Ohio having been with Cleveland so there's also a real possibility of keeping him past this season with Harangs contract and probably Arroyo's falling off the books.

What a rotation that would be adding Cliff! It sounds so feasible I dont know why it hasnt already been done really. I hope this isnt just a bunch of smoke but there are more than 1 source putting this out there and 700 has been talking about it for a week now. Please let this happen.

I'm still very leery of the Cards. Bullpens go in cycles and are combustible by their very nature. Carpenter, Wainwright and Garcia are better than our top 3 pitchers. They still have Pujols and Holliday in the middle of their order.

The biggest issue I see them having is the no talent ass clown types they usually get all star production from like Schumaker and Ryan are actually playing like the sub replacement level, punch and judy hitters they really are. Ryan Franklin seems to have remembered he's Ryan Franklin despite the usual voodoo that Duncan works on guys like him.

I think the war of attrition comment was dead on. This will come down to a couple of games and health if neither side makes a major addition at the deadline. The Cards are certainly capable of another 22 game stretch of .680 ball.

BTW The Reds still suck, there is no way they can win this thing. None.
