Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Ouch.

The conversation I had with my fiancee about the trade went more like this:

Me: Did you see who got traded by the Reds today?
Her: Yeah. Wasn't that Rosales guy good though?
Me: No. He ran to EVERYTHING though, so people thought he was good because he "hustled" at times when it was unnecessary and just for show.
Her: Oh. Well, the other guy, wasn't he any good?
Me: No. He was worse.
Her: Well since the Reds traded him he'll be awesome next year, you watch.
Me: I doubt it. He was the worst player in MLB last year. That's a fact.
Her: You watch.
Me: Gonna be kinda hard. He was cut by his new team upon arrival.
Her: Wow. Sucks to be him.
Me: Not really, he's getting paid handsomly to stay the fuck away from baseball.
Her: Oh, kinda like that Stanton guy?
Me: Yes, exactly.
Her: Well, who did the Reds get?
Me: It doesn't matter, he sucks too.
Her: Wait, so what was the point?
Me: The point is that those other guys are gone. Besides, this new guy gets paid less to suck.
Her: Why can't they ever trade for anybody good?
Me: Because they're the Reds.

Your fiancee is on it. Hell if I brought this subject up with my wife she would ask, "Who are the Reds?" Great dialogue though.

They still have The Dusty though. Sounds like a recipe for somebody destroying their TV to me.

If Miley and Narron making decisions with Grande telling me about it didn't lead to the TV's destruction then I think its pretty safe this year with just The Dusty and a decent team.

I know now at least I'll be able to watch Reds/Pirates games.

It didn't matter how much the team stunk, I still watched because I like a good trainwreck as much as the next guy, but one thing that was a sure-fire way to get me to change the channel was Grande calling the Pirates "the Bucco's" 14 times per 5 minute span. Holy hell that was like fingernails on a blackboard to me.

Other things I won't miss hearing:

"He got it, he got it"

"He's just a ball player"

"Get em on, get em over, get em in"

With Volquez down for at least half the season, at a minimum, I'm wondering who is covering his 15 wins on the pitching staff?

Depth is still an issue too. Rolen is 34, Cabrera is 36, and I'm not sure where Jay Bruce goes from his up-and-down ride last season. .500 is a start, but I think it's a stretch to ask for much more than 81 wins. Votto and Phillips have to stay healthy, and neither did last season.

The roster is already better, but given what they've been trotting out there the past five seasons it had nowhere to go but up; there's still holes and nothing on the pine.

For once the bullpen isn't a huge question mark....but the overall depth of the pen will be interesting to watch.

Gotta figure out a solution for closing games long term. By the time the rest of the team catches up, Rhodes will be 42 and Cordero will be 36.

I thought Masset was being groomed for that spot?

Even if he isn't there are a lot of power arms in the minors now and I still think the "closer" role is vastly over rated. I agree it takes the right guy to come into late inning, high leverage situations and get outs but Dusty doesn't use it that way. A closer to him is the guy who comes in to get the save stat in the 9th regardless of game situation. Almost any decent pitcher can rack up 30-40 saves doing that as the Danny Graves era illustrated to us all.

Oh god. Don't get me started on George Grande. He's worse than Brantley as the PBP on the radio.

But yeah, I get the language thing on RZ. I have trouble going back and forth from here, there, and my Browns site, as RZ is the one that is strict on language.

Was catching up on my Jim Day Tweets ... Juan Francisco was named Dominican Winter League MVP after posting .302, 11HR, and 42RBI. Willy Tevarez was signed by the Nationals yesterday. :slappy:
