Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Two whole pages of optimism in the Reds thread? What the fuck is going on around here?

+OC -Willy T is too good to be true for this club, so I'll just throw out there the distinct possiblity he runs into Rolen fielding a pop fly in spring training and ends both their seasons. Somethings gotta go wrong, I just know it.

So Reds fans, how good do you think this team can be? I'm looking at them and thinking that they might be a legitimate playoff team.

They were my childhood favorite and I still root for them, but I'm an Indians fan. Haven't followed the Reds for years - but I'm fairly impressed with their roster.

First legit shot at 82-85 wins since 2000 imo.

With Volquez down for at least half the season, at a minimum, I'm wondering who is covering his 15 wins on the pitching staff?

Depth is still an issue too. Rolen is 34, Cabrera is 36, and I'm not sure where Jay Bruce goes from his up-and-down ride last season. .500 is a start, but I think it's a stretch to ask for much more than 81 wins. Votto and Phillips have to stay healthy, and neither did last season.

The roster is already better, but given what they've been trotting out there the past five seasons it had nowhere to go but up; there's still holes and nothing on the pine.

I agree with this. I'm hoping for 81 wins. Not really expecting it, but I don't feel like as much of a jackass this year for hoping for it. That's progress, right?

Me: You'll never guess what the Reds did today?!? Best move they could have made!
Wife: Fire the manager?
Me: ...........damn. Make that the 2nd best move they could've made.

I'm so proud of her.

The funny thing is.....you know there's some guy out there pissed off about trading one of the fastest men in the game and a fan favorite for a schlub like Miles.

Best description of the trade I've seen so far...from BP:

As far as the trade, the best player in this deal is probably the one who hasn't been named yet, because really, could he be any worse than the principals? This might be the rare instance where everybody involved in the deal gets cut before he can do anything to hurt his employer, and the loser, at least on the diamond, could be whoever plays their guy(s) the most.

and then a shot at Willy T

Maybe somebody will grab Taveras to employ him at the minimum, changing the financial calculus slightly, but the only people who need to really worry are the season ticket-holders who made their purchases innocent of the threat that they might have to see Taveras playing for their hometown nine. Well, them, and everyone who's wondering about their Hacking Mass squad for 2010.

Ouch.

The conversation I had with my fiancee about the trade went more like this:

Me: Did you see who got traded by the Reds today?
Her: Yeah. Wasn't that Rosales guy good though?
Me: No. He ran to EVERYTHING though, so people thought he was good because he "hustled" at times when it was unnecessary and just for show.
Her: Oh. Well, the other guy, wasn't he any good?
Me: No. He was worse.
Her: Well since the Reds traded him he'll be awesome next year, you watch.
Me: I doubt it. He was the worst player in MLB last year. That's a fact.
Her: You watch.
Me: Gonna be kinda hard. He was cut by his new team upon arrival.
Her: Wow. Sucks to be him.
Me: Not really, he's getting paid handsomly to stay the fuck away from baseball.
Her: Oh, kinda like that Stanton guy?
Me: Yes, exactly.
Her: Well, who did the Reds get?
Me: It doesn't matter, he sucks too.
Her: Wait, so what was the point?
Me: The point is that those other guys are gone. Besides, this new guy gets paid less to suck.
Her: Why can't they ever trade for anybody good?
Me: Because they're the Reds.

It usually doesn't pay to argue with a woman but I'm with you in feeling comfortable fighting this battle. :wink2:
