Reds tidbits (2010 season)

There's no way he's going to get traded within the Division. In fact, my guess is he'll end up in the American League (White Sox, Angels, BoSox or Tampa would be my guess)....

I know that's probably true, but why should the Astros give a shit? It's not like they're going to be good again soon enough for something like that to matter. In the meantime, they owe Oswalt another $26 million for the remainder of this season and the next one, and in 2012 would need to pay him $2 million to walk or $16 million to stay. Right now they're a more expensive version of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

From their point of view they'd be crazy not to play it out until July 31'st to get the most they could for him. He should be the top pitcher available at the deadline.

I honestly think that Harang/Alonzo/couple of B level prospects for Oswalt (and his contract) is a good deal for both teams.

I agree on both counts that those would be smart moves. I don't think they'll actually trade him at the deadline though. I suspect they'll do enough to be able to tell him they tried, and then try to play out the string with him because they want him to retire a Houston Astro or some dumb shit like that. Witness this nugget of wisdom from their GM today:

"Roy's contract has a no-trade clause, not a trade-me clause," Wade said. "There is no rule that allows a player in his contract status to demand a trade. So demand, request, hold your breath until you turn blue, it's all the same. It's acknowledged and noted."

If that's their move, I think they're better off pulling it with Berkman than Oswalt. They can actually get something for Oswalt.

Astros Notes: Oswalt, Berkman, Reds, Castro: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

This source notes that a Harang-Oswalt swap would basically work out like an NBA contract for an expiring deal. Their salaries are pretty close, their buyouts are pretty close, but Harang's buyout can come one year earlier than Oswalt's, saving them $16 million.

I don't know if Houston would be able to use Alonzo at the ML level. If they give up Oswalt, I don't think they'd let Berkman go too. On top of that Carlos Lee is in LF playing like ass and carrying a prohibitive contract that runs thru 2012. According to COTS, Lee does have a "nominal weight clause" in his contract so the only way to get rid of him would be to hope he gets really fucking fat.

Harang will not be involved in any deal like that. If he is traded, his team option is automatically picked up for 2011. No team want to pay him $12 million+ next year. Harang is untradable.

COTS says otherwise...

if traded, 2011 option becomes mutual option at $14M ($2.5M buyout)

Now, not many teams are going to want to pay him $2.5 million to not pitch for them either. A deal for Oswalt is one of the few scenarios where it would make sense though since even with the buyout they would realize huge savings (15.5 million in salary plus buyout) over what they'd have to pay Oswalt.

Yeah, I just read that and deleted my post. Too late I guess. Yet why would any team pick up Harang just to pay his buyout? Any money deal would have the Astros picking up some of Oswalts salary. No need to involve Harang. Just tell Houston they need to pick up $2.5 million of Oswalt's salary + any money Harang makes the rest of the year. Then waive Harang. Houston doesn't want him.

In the end I bet there are enough teams who will pay all of Oswalt's deal, so the Reds are not about to get a cut rate. The trade would be prospects for Oswalt and his entire salary. Someone would pull the trigger on that.

gets?

I'd arrange for a shipment of Little Debbie products to mysteriously arrive at his door and call him in for a weigh in later in the week. He'd be as good as gone.

Per Tim Kirkjian just now on Baseball Tonight: The Reds are 13 games over .500 since the Scott Rolen trade last year. Tim suspects this is not a coincidence.

In a related story, I did not play Scott Rolen on my fantasy team today since it was a day game after a night game, so I presumed he'd be scratched.

It's not a coincidence. He brought maturity to a team that needed a leader.

Ride him while he's hot. He's due for an injury and injuries have marred what otherwise might has been a very good career and might have been a HOF type career.

Sports History

On this day in 1935 - At Crosley Field, the era of night time baseball begins as 25,000 fans watch the Reds beat the Phillies 2-1 in the first major league game ever played under the lights. During the pre-game ceremonies, President Franklin D. Roosevelt pushes a button at the White House to illuminate the field.
