Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Buck up fellas, I sweep is on the horizon in the form of the baseball deficient Cleveland franchise. They're like viagra...for the spirit.

Just like that, except the opposite.

Cincinnati Reds : baseball :: M*ch*g*n State : football. This was the start of a rapid dive to the bottom.

This will be a good opportunity for a team that wants to be taken seriously to bounce back and not let this knock them down...

Yeah it sucks, but looking back at it, it wasn't our best players in the game...It was like the perfect Storm...Cairo with an error, Nix with the doink over the fence, Lincoln in, CoCo coming in when he is not at his best...

Gotta say the offense looked good early in the game, and Leake pitched well again.

Yep. Might as well get all the bad karma out of the way in one game. As exasperating as it was, I'd rather they blow one 6-run lead rather than 6 1-run leads.

Man its nice to have Gomes and Nix in the game at the same time offensively.

The DH finally working out.

Everybody is getting into the act again today. Very surprising offense from these guys so far this season.

Small ball in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing but blindly following the spaulding guidebook without thinking about some of it is shortsighted at best.

Giving away outs with non pitchers to "get em over" is one such case. I know the case to be made for playing for 1 run late but its not the optimal use of your 27 outs.

Hell even Earl Weaver put on a bunt every once in a while. He was the complete antithesis of the small ball thinking.....

The bad part is the Reds continue to do well without much in the way of leadership from the Manager's office. It makes you wonder if what might happen if you had a manager who could win the 5-7 games per year that a manager can usually steer the team too...

I've never been inclined to jump on the "Fire Dusty" bandwagon, but, FUCK YOU DUSTY! FUCK YOU!

Even in this win, I find my contempt for you grow. Your decision making is worse than anyone we've ever had in the Reds manager position.

I feel better. Go Reds.

..

If you just generalize then yes, there is always a time for a bunt to play for the one run but in general, managers over do it and give up outs unnecessarily.

In this particular case to me its a question of 1) You either believe BP is a legit middle of the order hitter which means you should never have him bunt unless its for the WS winning run, in the bottom of the 9th at home or some such thing or 2) You believe BP is actually a double play prone hack that you should have sacrifice himself because you have no faith in him producing anything of value in that situation(my personal belief). #2 obviously then begs the question of what in the fuck were you doing having him hit 4th all that time if you think he sucks so bad you'd rather just have him bunt a runner over?

The other part to playing for 1 run in that exact situation was you have a combustible bullpen (at best). It almost forces you to have to play for the big inning, not the spaulding guidebook "manufacture" a run and turn it over to the closer deal. I'm expecting this to dawn on The Dusty sometime around late July, if ever.

I think I was being a bit too obscure....

what I meant to say that even the staunchest proponent of the "wait for the 3 run home run' theory would put down a bunt every once in a while. Dusty doesn't appear to be capable of adjusting his thinking to the scenario at hand.

FIFY

BTW, Oswalt wants out of Houston.

Harang and Alonzo and we pick up RO's contract is my offer.

There's no way he's going to get traded within the Division. In fact, my guess is he'll end up in the American League (White Sox, Angels, BoSox or Tampa would be my guess)....

I'm never going to get to bang Jessica Alba either but it's still fun to think about. :wink2:
