Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Come on, Stubbs.

Dusty's bathandling philosophy is bullshit, but when the tying run is on 3rd with no outs, you swing at anything in the strike zone. All you have to do is get the ball to the outfield in that situation. At least Cabrera got the job done.

Ok, my weekly exercise in futility. I like to look at where the fucktards rank in the NL on Sunday mornings. It doesn't mean anything other than just to give me a time to take a weekly snapshot of the carnage. There are 16 teams in the NL for anyone wondering and the Astros seem to have a stranglehold on last in every offensive category so keep that in mind when our 'tards are 14th or 15th.

Offense
Runs scored: technically tied for 9th but only 3 teams have scored fewer runs. Wait until more time passes and the numbers stretch out, everyone is lumped up right now.

Why could this be?
OBP: 15th
SLG:13th
OPS: 14th

Hmm, first rule of run creation club is don't make outs and they do the 2nd worst job in the NL at making outs. Second rule of run creation club is accumulate as many total bases as possible when you don't make an out, they do the 4th worst job in the NL at that.

Could it be a Dusty Baker managed club has poor plate discipline?
Contact rate: 15th
Strike out's: 1st (worst)

BB: 12th

I thought running off the only good hitter we had because he struck out too much was going to fix this? Now we still have the beer league softball mindset but with 5th grade gym class arms swinging the bats. Brilliant!

Speed and aggressive base running manufactures runs right?
Caught stealing: 15th (2nd most)
Stolen Bases: 2nd best
Totals: 13 of 18 for a 72.2% success rate which is borderline

You can just go on forever but it really comes down to the guy in charge, like a huge percentage of the fan base and broadcasting team, not actually understanding how runs are created.

  • You don't put fast guys at the top and just start "manufacturing" runs out of the thin blue fucking air.
  • You don't give away outs with non pitchers.
  • Players who's OBP is batting average driven don't actually have OBP skills if they aren't hitting.
Someone has to eventually understand that good pitching and offense are not mutually exclusive. We are allowed to do both within the rules of the game. Also they have to eventually understand that OBP matters. Find players who have the skill set that allows them to get on base even if they aren't hitting and quit with the little league mindset of "just put it in play". It doesn't work at the MLB level.

All joking aside, it is not better to swing at ball 4 than to take strike 3. Taking walks doesn't clog the bases, hitting home runs doesn't kill the rally. Sac bunting a non pitcher isn't "get em on, get em over, get em in" its giving away outs. If you aren't stealing at better than 70% you are running yourself into outs, not putting pressure on the fucking defense.

I don't think God himself could help this offense but having a typical old school baseball moron in charge encouraging a group of hacks to hack even more sure as hell isn't helping anything.

I turned on the game, saw that the Pirates had another one of the junkball throwing lefties out there and immediately turned it off. I see on SI.com it's now 5-1. This shit was over before it started.

Yep.

2 weeks in and I'm already reduced to just reading the box scores. Its unwatchable.

BTW Bruce killed 2 rallies, final was 5-3 Pirates.

Cincinnati Reds' Edinson Volquez fails test, gets suspended - MLB - SI.com

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez has failed a test for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games, SI.com has learned.
An announcement is expected shortly. It is believed he failed the test during spring training.
Volquez went 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA for the Reds in 2009. He was an NL All-Star in 2008 but has not pitched yet this season.
