My first reaction is good deal for the Reds and I hope Dickerson doesn't hurt himself before they can consummate the deal.

Edmonds off the bench for the stretch run is pure win.

Well, George Grande just creamed his pants.

I like it though. Dickerson's impact would've been marginal if any. This also makes Nix expendable since Edmonds will be the top LH bat off the bench. The best part is that it takes another bona fide Reds killer off the table for the stretch run.

Jocketty has a very strong track record of adding over-the-hill types for the stretch run that actually end up contributing. I'm behind this move until the actually results lead me to think otherwise.

...And both you and I said "bench" but to me this move also screams "LF platoon".

Edmonds is starting in CF tonight and batting 5th.

The lineup is:

Phillips 2B
Nix LF
Votto 1B

Edmonds CF
Bruce RF
Hernandez C
Janish SS
Leake P

The lineup is loaded with lefties. LaRussa has to be fantasizing about all of his double switch options for bringing in Trever Miller and Dennys Reyes.

EDIT: This also means that Nix won't be gone as I had speculated. Folks on RZ are speculating that Stubbs or even Heisey might get sent down, which is stupid. Jocketty isn't stupid so he isn't sending Heisey down, and he's demonstrated so far that he's pretty committed to Stubbs as a MLB player. I think now the more likely candidates are either Juan Francisco or Carlos Fisher, and they opt to carry six OF. Sending down Francisco would leave them perilously thin in the infield, but I think there's a good chance they'd rather be thin than actually play him anymore before Sept. I think Fisher is the smarter choice though, given how hesitant Dusty has been to use his long man out of the bullpen all season (see also: Owings, Micah).

I guess this will go down as both sides happy. I like Jim but he is breaking down and could go DL at any minute.

We aren't going anywhere and I would have been happy if we got a bag of chips for him - pretty sure he is retiring after this year so he is technically of no value to us but may be to you.

Also, I'll be at the park tonight, and for as much as I like this move part of me wants to boo Edmonds mercilessly in his first at bat - just to get that out of my system before I have to start cheering for him.

So the Reds get Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, Jason Isringhausen, and Russ Springer?

And the Cardinals get Felipe Lopez, Jason LaRue, Ryan Franklin, and Dennys Reyes?

Five bucks says Dickerson tears his ACL getting off the plane in Milwaukee, so fails his physical, or he walks into another locked revolving door and breaks a wrist. CD is more brittle than my mother.
