Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Looks like Jay Bruce's handicapped little brother. :!

So for real, so far this year we own St. Louis?! WTF?! So far this season the only one we've dropped to the Cards was a 10th inning rarity by CoCo. Holy crap what is the world coming to. Now if we could just figure out how to beat the stinking Brewers.

ALONSO TO AA: Yonder Alonso, the Reds' top draft pick last year, was promoted from Single-A Sarasota to Double-A Carolina. Alonso hit .302/.379/.503 with nine home runs and 37 RBI in 47 games with Sarasota.

Joey Votto meet left field, left field meet Joey Votto. Now you guys get to know each other because you'll be spending a lot of time together.

Actually my fear is they go overboard on the handedness thing and trade one of them because we would have too many lefties. :smash:

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. My understanding is that the Class A league that Sarasota is a part of is just a slight step up from an all-ages, everyone plays game at a Reds fantasy camp.

OK. Maybe Legion ball.

Based on his vast improvement in the field this season, I have a lot of confidence that Votto can turn himself into a decent-to-slightly above average outfielder.

Not that defense in left field is all that important when a guy is plus offensively

Thought I'd save you the time, jax. :p

My understanding from the people who's opinion I value is the guy is a Todd Helton type of offensive talent. Granted he's a couple of years away but from what I hear he's a difference maker.

I say Votto to LF because he's got the best chance of being decent out there of the two. My understanding is Alonso is really a DH who can only be hidden at 1B.

Like I said, my biggest fear is they do something stupid (pinch hit Castro for Hamilton type of dumb) so we don't have too many good hitters on the team that just happen to swing it from the left side of the plate.

God help me, but "spliting up the lefties with Alex Gonzalez" doesn't seem so bad in comparison. :slappy:

Just to indulge in some forward thinking speculation here, if Alonso is the real deal and comes up in 2010 you are looking at a radically different picture.

-Now you have Votto, Bruce, Alonso and BP. That takes the pressure off the need to have a difference maker at 3B and maybe EE isn't so bad all of a sudden when surrounded by more talent. You are now putting 5 above position average bats in the lineup every night.

-Now maybe you can use one of the all glove, no hit SS we have in house and say goodbye to AG.

-Maybe someone can take CF away from WT and he can be used for what he really is, a 5th OF and pinch runner extrordinair.

-All that and the pitching stays healthy and you just may have yourself a legit contender in the 'Nati for the first time in ages.

The fact three lefties in the lineup would drive Marty, Grande and Welsh completely fucking insane is just icing on the cake.

Hopefully Drew Stubbs can be that guy in CF next year. I know we already discussed him for this year, but I think he will stay in the minors this year (already debated...I think he could only platoon this year and the team would rather give him at bats in AAA). Yet he may be ready next year to take over CF. Oh, and he is right handed.

Absolutely, he was who I had in mind when I say WT could become the (massivly overpaid) 5th OF/pinch runner.

No Particular batting order but by position:

2-Hernandez
3-Alonzo
4-BP
5-EE
6-TBD maybe Janish? Anyone cheap all glove no hit will do
7-Votto
8-Dickerson/Stubbs
9-Bruce

With our current pitching thats a pretty young talented team right there.

I know I amjumping in here late, but IMO the bunt in this situation is playing to win, not tie. If you bunt, you now have the winning run in scoring positon. The guy at 3rd can score on a sac, the same DP ball, squezze, PB, etc. I think he showed a lack of confidence by not bunting. With the bunt, he shows confidence in his team to execute. Swinging away looks desparate to me, like he was hoping for something to happen instead of making something happen. I can see the other side of the argument in the 5th-7th inning but not 8th or 9th.

And who says they defend the bunt? That isnt a definite out. The bunt puts pressure on the defense to defend.

I think my stats 2 pages ago show that. We pretty much agree. Of course those same stats also show it's not a clear cut decision.
