Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

The overall standings are pretty damn telling when you look at run differential. It is almost split perfectly with the top 14 teams being + and the other 16 being -, with 2 exceptions.. the Yankees are 9-6 despite being -13, and then, of course, there's the Reds at -6. I concede that if this number doesn't continue to grow into the green for the Reds, .500 would be an accomplishment. I do think that this 7-3 trip shows the young pups that they belong in the bigs, and hopefully this club stays hot. Not necessarily long winning streaks, but taking 3 series in a row is very nice... 4, 5, or 6 would be great. We'll see how it goes..
I noticed that too and was going to post about it. The thing with the Yankees RS/RA differential is that it got so crooked solely because of Chien-Mien Wang and the side effect of his starts on the bullpen (particularly Clagget being asked to choke on the barrel in Cleveland). Wang and Clagget together have given up 31 runs (that's about 33% of their total) in just 7 innings of work combined (and Wang's a SP with 3 starts to his credit)!

I'm not saying you discount those RS/RA numbers right out of the gate because the numbers are what they are, and the Yankees RS/RA clearly hints that they've got a mess in their rotation, and they do, but I think you also have to look at the reasons the numbers have gotten so skewed when the sample size is still less than a months worth of games.

As this applies to the Reds: The offense hasn't been good, and this offense with this group of players will never be great, but it will certainly be better once Phillips and E5 start producing consistently. Bruce appears to have broken out of his funk, and that alone was a huge factor in taking 2 of 3 from the Cubbies. Willie Mays-Hayes is obviously pressing to hit 30 HR all in one day, and I'm certain E5's picture appears beside the term "slow starter" in the dictionary.

On the RA side, Burton and Lincoln have to pitch better, consistently. These two account for 18 runs (about 35% of the Reds RA) in 12 innings. One or the other (or both) have appeared in every game the Reds have lost, and in Burton's case, games he has appeared in have ended with the other team scoring 7, 7, 9, 6, 10, 6, and 9 runs, with the Reds being 2-5 in those games.

It reminds of the season a couple years back where Graves had 20+ saves near the end of May. Managing to win every close game, but getting blown out the rest of the time. I have to figure it will eventually catch up with them if they don't start scoring some more runs.

I think that was the '04 season after they had tried him as a starter in '03.

Going to the game tonight - It's NKU night so I got 'em for half price. Gotta remember to TIVO the Cavs.

I'll be sitting behind third base - backing up Edwin, I guess. :tongue2: I think this'll be my first time seeing Volquez pitch in person.

I might spring for a Joey Votto t-shirt or something.

Maybe somebody who saw it on TV can set me straight, but at the ballpark it looked like Volquez was getting squeezed. Then in the bottom of the ninth the home plate ump decided he had someplace to be and called strikes on anything that didn't bounce.

I had field level tickets on the aisle, and they were the worst seats I've ever had at any venue. I ended up behind some 400 pound guy who was constantly taking pictures (of the Reds?!) with the biggest fucking camera ever. People were walking up and down the aisle constantly during the game (not just between innings. We didn't see a damn thing until we moved in the fourth inning. It may have been the first time anybody's ever bought lower deck tickets and moved to the upper deck for a better view. I think in the future I'll just stick to my view level box seats behind home plate - the most underrated seats in the yard.

The new video screens are really nice.

Don't think so. Volquez was trying to nibble at the corners and keep the ball down but was missing badly. Over half his pitches crossed the plate at the batters' socks or lower. This has been a problem for him all year, and when he has thrown the ball up in the zone he's tended towards drilling right handed batters in the face.

Something is screwy with his release point right now.

From the notes following Cinci's 8-2 win yesterday:

Atlanta Braves vs. Cincinnati Reds - Recap - April 26, 2009 - ESPN

The Reds haven't made a roster move in the first 21 days of the season, their longest stretch since 1985, when they didn't make their first move until the 37th day of the season ...

Normally by this time of year, the Reds would have at least put their ace and Ken Griffey Jr on the DL, plus fired the manager, pitching coach, and GM.

It's time to bring up Rosales. Ive tried to be as patient as I can with Edwin but I cant take it anymore. That at bat he had with the bases loaded is the worst AB in the history of baseball..1st pitch swinging 2 feet outside and hit it about 2 inches JUST AWFUL

It is not just EE...It is about the whole lineup...We are full of hacks...When you are lighting it up at the plate...have the green light...If Votto is struggling and he swings at that 3-0 pitch he swung at, then that would of been a horrible at bat...but he is raking right now...

But BPhil and EE, and alot of the rest of the lineup need to see pitches...wait for better ones and work with them...

Especially when Oswalt was dealing...make him work a little bit...Hernandez was about the only one I saw do that...

And we need to find some offense...I would love to see Rosales up and in the two hole and playing LF...I would leave EE at 3b...

We need offense in the worse way, and it always sucks to see a well pitched game wasted by the closer in a non save situation...Just isn't the same adrenaline rush, and most closer seem to struggle in those situations...

Posted by TomGroeschen at 4/28/2009 5:16 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com
Updated 5:31 p.m. -- John Fay is down on the field and I am up in the pressbox -- John just called with this info:

The Reds just placed 3B Edwin Encarnacion on the disabled list. An MRI today showed a chip fracture in Encarnacion's left wrist. The injury was suffered on a swing during his final plate appearance last night, the Reds said. Encarnacion will be in a cast for 1 week, after which time the cast will be removed and he will be re-evaluated.

Adam Rosales has been called up from Louisville and is expected here in time for tonight's 7:10 p.m. game vs. Houston at Great American Ball Park. Rosales will wear uniform No. 23.

Encarnacion is hitting just .127. He is hitless in his last 12 at-bats and is 1 for his last 28. He has a homer and 5 RBI.

Rosales (.431 BA in AAA) was riding an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in all 17 of his games?the 17-game on-base streak is the longest this season in the International League...through today?s games, he ranks among IL leaders in most offensive categories, including batting average (.431, 2nd), hits (28, 1st), doubles (7, T3rd), on-base percentage (.479, 4th), slugging percentage (.754, 1st), extra-base hits (12, 1st) and runs scored (18, 5th). He also has 4 home runs.

Rosales, 25, is 6-2 and 195, bats and throws Right. Chicago native. Selected by Reds in 12th round of June 2005 draft. Brief apps. with Reds in three stints in '08, hit .207 (6 for 29) with a 2B, 2RBI, 1 steals.
