Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Still nice to take 2 out of 3 @ MIL and 3 out of 4 @ HOU with that offensive onslaught. Imagine if BP had 12 RBI in the past week, and the Reds dropped 4 or 5 of those.

"Man, we suck, but it sure is nice seeing all these runs!!"

Not trying to be a smart ass, but it's nice winning division road games in the mean time.

"man we suck but the left field defense sure is better" will be the saying by the time its all over.

Many were trying to tell people this team would struggle to score 700 runs this season and that the pitching wasn't good enough to overcome that. It's the same story every year, people see and hear what they want to.

I loved Dunn's production...The reason why I like the fact that he is gone, is due to the character change...Dunn and Griffey were just not guys that we were going to win with...Reds fans had such negative attitudes toward the two, because they had to blame someone...

It is nice to see guys finally pitching fairly well tho...Getting good defense...

Now if we could just find ways to have a couple guys have career years...I think Votto could be an all-star, but 1B in the national league is going to go to Pujols unless he gets hurt...

Bruce, Phillips, and EE have not hit well at all to start the season...If they could get going we could start scoring some runs...

We have a couple bats that could be ready by start of next season...Frazier and Alonso...But then the question arises where do you put them...

We could use a SS for sure...Valaika (AAA) and Cozart (AA) are two guys that could factor into the equation in the future...

Could it be about time to part ways with EE this year? We have Rosales who could be a stop gap before Frazier, and we have Soto who is a true hitter at the age of 20-21 in A+...Probably a year or two away...But loads of talent...

OF seems about set depending on what we do...RF is Bruce's for about 10 years...Taveras, Dickerson, Stubbs, Heisey are all guys in our organization, and then LF is where we could use the upgrade to the offense. Would be best if we could go RH there, and Frazier could be someone we go with there...He doesn't quite have the HR power that we would be looking for, but he does have the ability to hit...

I would look to deal EE, Arroyo, and Gonzo...Not because I am giving up on the season, but this team right now is not going to get us to the playoffs. And those guys are ones that we have players within our system that are cheaper and should be able to produce what they are...

Rosales/Frazier, Bailey, Janish/Valaika would be my replacements mid-season...Then depending on what we got for those 3...I would think that the first two could bring back a pretty decent return...

yeah, I kept hearing that as I watched guys like Eric Milton, Jimmy Anderson and Jimmy Haynes pitching for us. Didn't make any sense to me then and it doesn't make any sense to me now.

I'm curious as to exactly what kind of offensive players people think you are going to win with when you have the worst pitching staff in the league?

I'm guessing Griffey's salary was a big reason we kept running stiffs out there. When we did spend big on SP, it was guys like Milton. Those 2 players alone handcuffed this team simply by what they made and then the results they turned in. Dunn's problem was the fact he was going to want to get paid, and by getting rid of him, the house-cleaning is almost complete. You just can't do it all in one season. They are on the right track.

While I would like to see the errors associated with EE go away, this guy is too clutch behind the plate (give him time, it's week 2) to get rid of. I would admit he has to look more appealing to an AL team where he doesn't have to field and just hit. Arroyo, yes, we have plenty of young good pitchers in our system that we could place in his spot and a veteran pitcher like him could be a nice draw for other teams. The question is who would we get for him? Would karma come back to bite us in the ass and give us a Willy-Mo? As far as Gonzo, who would we put in his place? Your suggestion of putting Janish in there is not really going to help. Janish is about as good at hitting as gonzo an is less experienced in the field. That said...way to go Red Legs! No walks and a shutout!

That or a complete lack of ability to identify or develop pitching.

They are on the right track.

As the signing of Willy T clearly demonstrates.

The saying is never bet into a streak. These clowns have sucked ass for the better part of 15 years. I'll believe they have unfucked themselves when I see it.

I cannot remember a better pitching staff since 1990, which has me optimistic. I know your favorite Virus in CF is not the answer, nor is our current SS, possibly 3B... there are plenty of holes which will take time to fill, but I cannot remember this team looking as "close" as they are right now in a long time.

Games like tonight have me paying attention.

I knew it would only take until the end of April before someone said the Reds were "close"....

The Dunn/Griffey thing...They were not great chemistry guys...Dunn obviously wanted money...I mean he went to the natinals...

I don't remember but maybe a week or two, when Dunn put the team on his back and carried us...I see Joey Votto already doing that to start the season...Votto/Bruce are guys you build around...Great chemistry guys...

Remember Seattle with Griffey, A-rod, they leave and they had better years...

Worth mentioning that either Thom or Grande (and Welsh) spoke in an earlier broadcast about going out to a restaurant while on the road trip and running into the team, and there were seven or eight of the younger guys sitting down and eating together ... that the young guys made plans to hang out together every night.

With Dunn and Griffey, as soon as a game ended, it was 25 guys going in 25 different directions to get the hell out of dodge, unless of course Griffey was too distracted by something one of the Reds' radio guys had said about him, since that stuff could hurt his feelings, then Griffey would have to stay and take out his 0-fer-4, 2 GiDP performances on Jeff Brantley.
